The 2021 U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament is in the books. Had a great week at OceanIsleBeach.com We had some great bites Friday and could not capitalize on them. Saturday we caught a 5 # spanish mackerel and a 9.5 # king mackerel. Definitely not what we wanted to weigh, but we had fun doing it. Had some big fish caught around us and Hey Now Charters, LLC caught their 9th place fish right beside us, just wasn’t our time. Great family week at OceanIsleBeach.com. I think we had more trips to Ocean Isle Fishing Center than total days spend at the beach. Even boatless (still getting upgrades) we had a great time.

Ended up with around 8” of snow for the week just to the south of Nashville.

Far from fishing weather. Spent the week working (playing) in the snow. Not very often do you see worse MPG than towing the boat, but definitely did this week.

This past weekend we fished the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament and mother nature didn’t disappoint but the fishing sure did. Spent Tuesday-Thursday loading the bait pen with some really good looking pogies.

Friday we checked out of Little River and fished a couple different spots from the inlet down to the sky wheel. Mid day decide to drift a few baits and ended up missing 4 fish on our first drift. 1 of which missed all 4 baits. After a couple more drifts decided to move up to Shallotte inlet to finish our the day. Ended Friday with 4 missed kings, 2 sharks and a lost grip flip.

Saturday we checked out of Holden Beach and fished offshore of Oceancrest Pier with bait everywhere but no bites. Decided to move to the shipping channel and fished it hard for the rest of the day. Around 1:00 we got the bite we needed on a lack luster pogy we were bringing in to change out. Fished missed it in the first pass an after free spoiling the pogy the king inhaled the bait about 15’ off the transom. The king peeled off a couple hundred yards of Bullbuster and the chase was on. Fault the fish for 20 min (huge thanks to Chris Register and Main Event for giving us the room we needed to fight the fish) got the fish to the leader twice. After the final run we got the fish about 30’ from the bow and p**f pulled the hooks. Heartbreaker. We didn’t get anymore bites the rest of the day.

Great tournament with great friends. Burned a lot of fuel and had a great time at OIB
