Friday was our final Open Water Practice of the summer, and what an incredible way to finish!

Over the last few weeks, these swimmers have grown so much not just in speed, but in confidence, awareness, and respect for the ocean.

We started by learning the fundamentals: surf dashes, swimming out to “Bob the Buoy” (thanks, Coach Kim!), buoy turns, box swims, and finishing every practice body surfing while learning to read waves, keep our hands out front, and dive under breaking waves.

This practice brought a new challenge:
🏊 12th Street to 14th Street
🏊 12th Street to 16th Street, passing the fishing pier (about 850 yards!)
🏊 And finally, all the way to the singles rowing flags, where we took a moment to float, look back at the beach, and appreciate how far we’d come.

Along the way, they improved their catch, sighting, breathing, endurance, and navigation. More importantly, they learned how to safely swim in open water by understanding wind, tides, currents, gullies, sandbars, and hazards like outfall pipes and piers.

Watching this group become stronger, smarter, and more confident in the ocean has been so rewarding. I’m incredibly proud of every single swimmer. They absolutely crushed it and we can’t wait to be back next summer! 💙🌊

FIRST OPEN WATER PRACTICE OF THE SEASON ⚡️🌊

Friday morning, our Silver + Gold swimmers took on their first ocean session of the year and they showed up ready to work!

With nearly 20 athletes in the water, our swimmers tackled a full progression of ocean skills:
- Surf dash
- “Can runs” (dash + 15-yard swim)
- Ball swim out & back
- Navigation & sighting
- Using landmarks
- Bodysurfing

The conditions gave our swimmers a true taste of open water: WSW winds, 3 ft waves, Inshore current running south, Offshore current outside the sandbars running north

✅ 600m box swim

Our athletes practiced reading the ocean, finding their line, knowing when to sight, and staying focused on their course skills that build confidence and strength in the surf.

We are incredibly proud of the effort, teamwork, and determination our Silver + Gold swimmers brought to the water today. ⚡️🌊
