Martial arts competition absolutely counts toward promotion and rank. Stepping into the ring, cage, or on the mat teaches lessons that can’t be learned any other way.
That being said, competition alone does not determine total knowledge.
I’ve met phenomenal fighters who could beat most people in the room, yet couldn’t explain a single technique, why it works, when to use it, or how to teach it to someone else. Being a great athlete and being a great coach are two completely different skill sets.
Can you take the soccer mom with no athletic background and help her improve? Can you teach the uncoordinated kid who struggles with basic movement? Can you break down technique in a way that makes sense to different types of students?
Competition experience matters. Technical knowledge matters. Coaching ability matters.
The best martial artists develop all three.
A champion isn’t automatically a great coach, and a great coach isn’t automatically a champion. They’re separate entities, and both deserve respect.
