Philadelphia Rock Gyms

Philadelphia Rock Gyms Founded in 1994, PRG Oaks is one of the oldest climbing facilities in the country. Soon, they were one of the best.

Founded in 1994, the first Philadelphia Rock Gym was built by two college friends (Matt & Greg) who had a vision-to bring their passion and enthusiasm for climbing back to their hometown and to make a living doing what they loved. By taking the novel step of bringing climbing inside, they became one of the first indoor climbing centers in the US.

Climbing might start as a solo thing, but it rarely stays that way. You end up sharing beta, cheering on strangers, and projecting together. That’s the part people don’t expect.

“I was exposed to climbing through the Boy Scouts. I tagged along with my brother’s troop when I was about 8 years old. In 2006 a scouting friend told me about his new job at a climbing gym 6 miles from my house. By Spring I had a membership and was climbing 3-4 times a week.”

“There’s a lot I like about climbing, the most important thing that’s kept me at it for 20 years now is the people. The friendships made, the good times had, and the anticipation of more friendships and good times to come. The unknown ahead of you is an amazing battle against fatigue, problem solving, and the will to push on.”

Where does Palmer like climbing outside? ”Governor Stables and Mount Gretna Aka Governor Dick Park. The Gunks in NY are amazing but the New River Gorge stole my heart in 2009 and never let go. ”

“When routesetting I look to create fun, fair, repeatable, physical and mental puzzles. I excel at setting impossibly techy slabs, and powerful overhangs, but find just as much joy trying to reinvent how easy a VB can truly be.. I set climbs for all experience levels from the first day beginner to the seasoned professional, and finding a way to challenge everyone and keep them coming back is the ultimate goal.”

Some sessions feel strong, others feel like a struggle. Both are part of the process. Progress doesn’t always show up the way you expect. Keep showing up anyway.

Alex got into climbing with one of his friends who was already a member at PRG, he brought Alex along on a day pass in 2018. He bought shoes the next day and has been an avid climber since.

AIex likes climbing because the only real opponent is yourself. Physical ability obviously plays a part in how well you climb on any given day, but so much of your performance is based around your own mental limitations. Essentially, if you believe in it and work hard enough towards it, you can accomplish anything.

“My favorite outdoor spot is the New River Gorge in West Virginia, most specifically the Sunshine Boulders and Meadow Top. Close 2nd goes to The Gunks in upstate New York.

My personal route setting philosophy is super layered and multifaceted. We need to make sure we hit a few key points with our setting, including but not limited to, fun, challenging, and diverse. We need to make sure there's climbs on offer for everyone across the entire spectrum of climbers, and educational. How can we introduce movement and holds, across all grades, that climbers can learn from.”

Brendan first tried out climbing at Temple University in 2015

“I’m motivated by the unique challenges of movement and strength that climbing offers. Nothing quite compares to chalking up outside and finding your way up a boulder or route. Maybe you get to the top and enjoy it or maybe you just found your new project.”

He loves climbing in Chattanooga on southern sandstone!

“My general setting philosophy is loose. I like to come in with an empty mind. I feel like my body of movements has grown rather extensively over the years, but I’m not adverse to experimenting.”

That moment when you finally trust your feet and stop over-gripping everything. Game changer. Climbing gets a whole lot more fun when you’re not fighting the wall. It just takes time on the holds.
