05/09/2026

Instead of our usual GameChanger recap tonight, I wanted to speak directly to the people who have supported Oakland Softball through the years and the many who continue to pour into this program today.

This afternoon, Oakland closed out league play with a win over North Douglas and officially finished the regular season undefeated in league play.

As I continue digging through the history of Oakland Softball and piecing together records and stories from past generations, one thing I do know for certain is this: prior to this season, the only league title in program history came in 2005. Which also means this is the first undefeated league season Oakland Softball has ever accomplished.

Today before taking the field, longtime Oakland Softball supporter Mike Bottaro and I stood looking out over what has become such a beautiful place to play a softball game. Mike was one of the original community members who helped start Oakland Softball by building the very first softball field and helping bring this program to life back in 1993. Standing there together, both of us got a little choked up thinking about the history of this program and all of the people who helped build it.

And that’s what I really want this post to be about.

I want to recognize the many individuals over the past several decades who have poured into Oakland Softball and helped put us in the position we are in right now. Former players. Coaches. Parents. Volunteers. Community members. Booster supporters. The people who dragged fields, worked concessions, ran fundraisers, fixed equipment, painted fences, donated money, and believed in this program long before moments like today ever existed.

One metaphor I use often with our softball teams is the idea that the mighty oak is the result of many growing seasons. Every single year adds another ring. Sometimes the ring is a wide band representing growth, prosperity, and success. Other years it’s a dense dark band representing adversity, resilience, and hunkering down through difficult seasons. But every year matters. Every year adds another ring. And the mighty oak that we are today is a direct result of all the years and generations of growth that came before us and allowed us to stand where we are now.

After the game, the only thing I could really tell our girls was that I was overcome with emotion and incredibly proud of them.

As for this season, we are far from done and we still have a lot of unfinished business ahead of us. But today felt really good.

And if there’s one undeniable truth about softball, it’s this: in a game built so heavily around failure, you have to stop once in a while and soak up the moments when everything comes together.

Today was one of those moments.

Thank you, Oaker community. 💙🥎💙

With love,

Coach Held
