I had the pleasure to be on a panel with this dear woman back in 2018. It was a life changing experience to be in the presence of this amazing elder. Her inspirational wisdom and generosity to share helped forge the motivation to elevate the vision of Brown Girls Climbing Program. We are forever grateful for her time, dedication and leadership.

Brown Girls Climbing Team starts Fall s2 this week! Fall in the E. Bay is perfect weather for an intensive outdoor rock climbing module. All 3 teams dive into bouldering and rope climbing during these gorgeous 70 degree weather afternoons. This season the Competition Team not only sets their own top rope anchors to climb but also takes the sharp end, sport climbing outside next weekend at Castle Rock in Los Gatos! Aging in members of the Peak Team (10+ yr old), focus outdoor safety management, proper belaying, voice and confidence this session. Getting to the top is just a part of the experience. Feeling confident about the process and the system supporting the journey is the value of learning more than climbing. The Ascent Team (ages 7-9), excited to explore the world of climbing are stepping into the pedagogy of movement w/footwork and fundamentals. This is their first time. Organic on rock, free and sovereign in exploration!

Our weekly team program is deep into weekly fall adventures despite asswit chaos, layoffs and anticipated broken performative DEI rx of the industry. Decades of hurricane preparedness; 1st Responder lines during Katrina, Hugo, Opal has fortified our understanding of bearing resilience w/community joy.
The first session, known as the Endurance Cycle, is an important time reconnecting, welcoming growth, newness, develop trust, communication skills, establish season rhythms, taking pulse of the container. It’s a wonderful experience witnessing the culmination of new energy collide. Early weeks included calming the flurry, paddling afternoons on the still bay waters thanks to support of adventure partners, . We also hiked, prepared for camping trips, learned new skills in the Outdoor Immersion Academy including all camp kitchen, cooking and cleaning mgmt. Peak Team had an 'in-the-field' trip to . Little Red Riding Hood experience through every camping section to find 'the best fit for our bodies' has all inspired for outdoor independence. The Comp Team racked training hrs bouldering thanks to welcoming gym, . Rope climbing opportunities thanks to . We make adventure happen & grateful for partners commitment to community bridge building. We're still an oddity in all white spaces, but the kids have embraced climbing as their own, and are able to move about these spaces in a magical confident bubble. We're venturing out, exploring more of Bay offerings this fall, adding axe throwing, smash rooms, to our cross training curriculum. All incredible emotional, mental, physical, spiritual stimulating experiences. Youngest team members had most to work out ; destroying everything from speakers to printers for practice in power, gross motor development, proprioception.

Our 10th season just started! Join Brown Girls Climbing Team in E. Bay Area weekly nature based exploration centering and elevating girls of color ages 7+. We bridge access and opportunities to explore adventures in water on land, rock and beyond in a safe, seen, environment creatively led in a safe, organic community.

Brown Girls Climbing Team offers age appropriate weekly team sessions for girls and non-binary youth of the Afro-Diaspora, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Desi, communities of the Global Majority. Ascent Team(ages 7-9), Peak Adventure Team (ages 10+), and Competitive Team (ages 9+) meet weekly at planned adventure locations throughout the E. Bay. Each program has a uniquely progressive inclusive model fostering independence, confidence and social emotional connection. Our program is rooted in the fabric of African Proverb: Each One, Teach One, guiding cultural identity celebration, respect and awareness of self, forging environmental justice, equity and access for girls of color. From the tennis court to the crag, we continue to rise!

Taylor Townsend is moving on at the US Open and she did it with skill and grace. Even after her opponent tried to throw shade, calling her “uneducated” and “no class,” Taylor showed exactly what winning with poise looks like.

We’re beyond proud of this queen for not only securing the W, but proving that talent + confidence speak louder than any bitter words.

Our program thoughtfully considers social emotional growth needs of participants, w/developed fluid age appropriate teams unapologetically centering girls of color. We bridge access to adventure! Our rich experiences, indoor/outdoor rock climbing, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, hiking, horsebackriding, ice/outdoor skating, camping, caving, axe throwing and adventure trips just some activities this season starting Sept 3.
