PitchAI Series: Introduction: PitchAI is a tool that measures EXACTLY how athletes are moving on the mound. This motion capture technology can be accessed directly on your iPhone; it allows for efficiency and functionality when trying to learn and assess one's ability to move on the bump. The data that’s collected is then put into a biomechanical analysis report very similar to a motion capture evaluation performed at Driveline.

At RSP and CISL, we use PitchAI coupled with a physical evaluation to help determine exercise selection in their workout and drill work for their throwing. This eliminates the guesswork and should allow the athlete to make more improvements faster

Spin Rate vs Vertical Break: “Spin rate” has been a hyped up metric for some time now. When MLB introduced statcast for the first time in 2015, one of the first metrics the new doppler radar system began to measure was spin rate. Since then, coaches, players, and analytical teams have tried to find a way to correlate spin rate to success on the mound. Unfortunately, without much consistent data spin rate can really only be used to understand a player's potential.

Vertical Break is a more efficient metric to look at when trying to see how your pitches play against hitters. As we all know a pitch delivered to home plate doesn’t actually “rise”, but some pitchers are able to create the illusion that the ball is rising. That illusion is called Vertical Break. The higher the Vertical Break, the bigger the illusion is to the hitter that the ball is “rising”, which if executed properly can lead to a significantly higher whiff %.

Today marks my third week out of Tommy John and one of the flaws in my previous training habits is the lack of a consistent nutrition regimen. I figured now is a great time to consult with a dietitian and come up with a plan in order to help me come up with a easy to follow diet and meal prep planning.

There are multiple reasons why good nutrition has a direct correlation to achieving peak athletic performance. While I won’t go into specifics here, proper nutrition is a key ingredient to your success on the mound.

It’s never too late to implement a good diet, and this Excel sheet that I created with the help of a upcoming dietician should help those of you struggling to maintain a consistent whole foods diet.

Interested in learning more? I created a Discord channel dedicated to help athletes become the best version of themselves. This server has tons of free resources (including access to a strength coach and a dietitian) to help guys trying to take their game to the next level. DM me for an invite link!

Wondering if you’re a 4 seam or sinker guy?

It all starts with vertical break.

A elite level 4seam fastball KPI(goal) is >17.5 inches of vertical break .

Having trouble with spin efficiency? It all starts with your plyo drill work. If you’re cutting the plyos you are going to cut the baseball. That’s just how it works. Great adjustment by after watching some slow motion video, we were able to diagnose why his spin efficiency was lower than what it should be.

Current USF pitcher is a great example of how spin rate can be an overrated metric when looking at pitch data. As you can see here, Tommy doesn't have a crazy high spin rate. However, he manages to create 20+ inches of vertical break on his FB. Spin rate should never be a make or break metric to look at, but more so a way to determine an athletes potential.
