Day 9 - EuroDisney and Montmarte (Paris)

Day nine

We enjoyed breakfast at the Hotel then made our way to Eurodisney. The weather was incredible! Cool and clear. The park was quite crowded and the rides were different (usually much wilder!) Than those back in California. We were in the park free to roam until we met up at four in the afternoon. We then made our way to Montmartre in northern Paris. We had about an hour and a half of free time to visit the sacre coer Cathedral built (completed in 1919) following the French defeat during the Franco Prussian War in order to "please" God and hopefully ensure no French defeat in the future. Becky bought us a delicious selection of macarons to enjoy before we headed down to meet Roman for the ride home.

We met in the lobby to thank all those involved in making this adventure one we will never forget.

Day 8 - Palace at Versailles, Paris Sightseeing, and Eiffel Tower

We enjoyed breakfast at the IBIS hotel lobby. Lost power this morning caused a lot of shower room juggling and breakfast was delayed for some. Becky commandered the wind and got power responded and between her and Roman, we were under way for a big day. The weather was absolutely lovely today.

First stop was the Palace of Versailles . Built by the longest reigning king in France (because he was four when he ascended the throne) Louis XIV " the sun king" had the palace constructed on the grounds of a family hunting lodge. We were amazed by the golden gates and how the sun's rays hit them. We met our tour guide Irene (A former Dutch French teacher) who led us through the rooms. Irene did a great job explaining the symbolism in each of the rooms, what generally took place in each of the Royal apartment rooms. Following the guided tour, we had time to visit the vast Gardens and fountains spread throughout the grounds.

We departed for Paris with Irene on board to narrate our driving tour. Our first stop was the Latin Quarter near Notre Dame where we all had lunch and did some shopping.

Our driving tour included the Arc de Triomphe, the Eifel tower, the Champs-Élysées, the Opera House, the Grand Palace and the Petite Palace, Les Invalides, and Napoleon's tomb, Concors Square.

Next we made our way to the area around Montparnasse Tower and had a few minutes to pick up some groceries. We ate dinner at Flam's composed of salad and a thin crispy crust pizza bread from the Alsace region or France.

We ended the night by exploring the observation deck of the Montparnasse Tower and enjoyed a 360 degree view of Paris including the sparkle of the Eiffel Tower (7 PM).

Roman drove us back to the hotel where we arrived at eight. Ready, Set, go for a full day at EuroDisney tomorrow.

Day 7 - Bretagne (Brittany) to Paris, via Chartres

Becky, our commandant, compelled us up and out of our beds (well, most of us) by 7 AM for breakfast (petite dejeauner) so that Roman could propel us onward to Paris before super slammed traffic overtook our plans for touring le Louvre. He got us loaded and on the road by 747. The weather was clear and cool, but promised to warm considerably.

The 3 hour drive was broken by a pit stop along the autoroute. Macarons and caffee were on the menu. How can North Americans live without croissants, and macarons. As the sun rose in the east, it dispelled darkness in a beautiful array of light. A casual glance around revealed that some were not able to appreciate this beautiful natural phenomenon, so Virgil added a couple of sunrise photos to todays blog. Otherwise, all photos were taken by group members.

We reached Chartres around lunch and spent the next hour touring the perfectly preserved Chartres' Cathedral Notre-Dame constructed in 1252, it is the widest of the Gothic style cathedrals in Europe. The architecture was incredible. A meditation labyrinth in the flooring was enjoyed by some of the group. The stained glass, quire, nave and relics, and the relief designs in the quire depicting the story of the life of Jesus was enjoyed by all. Taking a moment to light a candle in thanks for such a house of worship was done by some. How this church survived being bombed in WWII was a miracle. In the town we grabbed some food stuffs, more croissants and coffee (especially the burre Sel caramel recommended by Emma and Ting) then it was on to Paris.

We arrived in Paris and headed directly to le Louvre. To see the glass pyramid come into view after crossing the Seine River was a milestone in itself for some of the group. It was a bustling day in the city for sure! We had free time to explore le Louvre, shop, and eat before meeting Becky at 6 PM near the inverted pyramid. Highlights were the Mona Lisa, the Greek, Egyptian, and Roman antiquities, and the French Renaissance masterpieces.

Shortly after walking through the main courtyard, we hopped aboard the Pont Neuf river cruises For an evening cruise along the Seine River. We travelled upstream first to capture magnificent river views of le tour d'Eiffel and watched it sparkling in the fading light. We enjoyed seeing several other major Paris attractions including the MO - Monet Museum, National Assembly building, and Notre-Dame (still under reconstruction after the devastating fire in 2019). Roman had expertly maneuvered the coach to pick us up right on Pont Neuf. We arrived at l'hotel IBIS and settled in for the night. Another lovely day!

Day 6 - Saint-Malo

Most of us rested en route to St Malo, a coastal walled city constructed during the 15th century in the Brittany (Bretagne) region of France. It served as a point of defense against the invading British who sought to seize control (and failed), a base for privateers to seize and loot merchant vessels, and later as a N**i occupied territory during WWII. We enjoyed a walking tour from our local guide Saint-Malo citizen Simone, who told us about the city and showed us St. Vincent Cathedral. Ahh those French L'Enchanteurs (Chateaubriand) buried on the furthest seaward point of a nearby island. We enjoyed some free time to shop and enjoy pastries before meeting for dinner in the city. We had savory buckwheat crepes and sweet chocolate crepes tonight. We walked out of the city and met our coach before heading back to le Cygne for the night. It was a beautiful day by the coast.

As always, a big thank you to Becky for guiding us on this adventure, and to Roman who keeps us safe on the roads.

Day 6 - Mont-Saint-Michel (you will see why these two sites were split into two posts).

We awoke to our first French rain (Il pleut). After a continental breakfast at our hotel - Le Cygne we jumped on our coach at 7:45 and soon Roman had us zipping along the quiet country roads. It is still a wonder how there can be so few traffic lights in this country, but it does mean the coach makes a lot of turns through the traffic circles. We rode on mostly in silence for an hour to the base of Mont-Saint-Michel on the eastern most part of the Brittany (Bretagne) coast - separate from the Normandy region we had visited stew previous two days. It was still pouring when we first began to see our destination looming up ahead. We arrived at the coach parking lot amidst a heavy shower - fortunately most had brought suitable rain attire. Just before catching a shuttle bus, the skies cleared and the morning became bright. As the sun broke through the clouds, a stunning scene unfolded before our eyes, the island fortress and the Abbey on the hill appeared to flash in the sunlight ahead of us. Built in 966 following a monk's dream of St. Michael ordering construction, the buildings have been continually used since then - sometimes as a site for pilgrimages, a prison, and then recently as a holy order again.

Upon arriving at the base of the island, the entire group eventually made it to the top of the stairway that in some ways did lead us into the heavens. The steep incline and stair combination increased our enjoyment and wonder of the buildings. The entire site left all feeling as if they had been transported to another dimension, of time and space. The self guided tour of the Abby was foundational to our understanding of the site. Our appreciation for the site opened our wallets and we eagerly gathered foods, books, momentous from this incredible venue. Free time was spent wandering the streets and ramparts, trying to take in everything before returning to the coach. We did not mind the crowded shuttle bus even though our bouncer had to preserve our ability to keep the group in one bus. We left the site feeling as if we had really experienced somewhere great!!!

As always, a big thank you to Becky for continuing to add incredible experience and information on this adventure. And to Roman- your coaching skills are legendary.
