🚵♂️ 7 TIPS FOR RIDING SINGLETRACK WITH KIDS 👊
Getting your kids on the trails is not about how fast they can ride or how difficult a trail they can conquer.
It’s about building confidence, having fun, and creating memories. ❤️
Here are 7 things that have worked for us:
1️⃣ BUILD CONFIDENCE FIRST
Start on easy dirt roads where they can learn to move around and get comfortable with loose dirt, rocks, and debris.
2️⃣ SAFETY FIRST 🪖
A helmet and knee pads are the minimum. As their skills progress, add a full-face helmet, elbow pads, and a chest protector.
3️⃣ START WITH GREEN TRAILS 🟢
Find easy-access trails and, if possible, ride the trail first. An e-bike can be a great tool for towing your kid on the climbs, saving their legs and allowing them to focus on enjoying the downhill.
4️⃣ SHOW THEM THE LINES
Ride in front and demonstrate smooth lines, how to approach rocks, and how to navigate obstacles. Once they know the trail, let them take the lead.
5️⃣ LET THEM CHOOSE THE CHALLENGE
Even when you know they’re ready for a harder trail, let them make the decision. A challenge is great—but it has to be their idea.
6️⃣ THEY WILL FALL ❤️
When it happens, comfort them. Talk about what they were doing well. Take a short break, give them some encouragement, and say:
“You’ve got this. Let’s finish strong!”
7️⃣ CONFIDENCE > EQUIPMENT
Good equipment definitely helps, but building confidence is even more important. If they need a water break, want to walk a section, or simply need some encouragement, support them.
And yes… a nice treat after the ride is always a good idea! 🍦😎
The goal isn’t to create the toughest rider.
The goal is to create a rider who believes they can. 💪🚵♂️❤️
