Here’s a fun race report from Sarah Lamont.
Sup-er-yak 2020! My first solo race in almost a year. This race consisted of 2.6 mile kayak and 4.5 (ish) mile trail run. I’ve never tried to race a kayak before. I had no idea what to expect. I knew the course would be hard since and designed it. I wasn’t sure how to pace myself in my kayak. Note to self, push harder next time. I surprised myself with my kayaking ability. Time for the run. Loved seeing all my friends out volunteering in the cold rain. They are the best volunteers and friends around!!! I’ve had bronchitis for the past week and I’m on antibiotics. I didn’t expect much from the run. I knew it would be a struggle with wet trail conditions and my breathing. Again, I shocked myself. I had a great run and was having so much fun, I ran an extra 1.3 miles back over the hills. Even with the weather conditions not being great and running off course, I had an absolute blast!!! This is a fantastic event and I can’t wait to do it again next year. Hats off to for another great race. Finished 2nd overall female in the Kayak division. @ Haw Ridge Personal Best Racing

It’s beginning to look a lot like race season........ Many of our athletes took advantage of the multiple racing opportunities offered this past weekend. Today, we take a quick look at a few athletes who ventured outside the Knoxville area to race. Keith McCloud and Jen Gerard made an appearance in Pikeville, TN for the Fall Creek Falls Triathlon hosted by Endurance Sports Management. The Dad-Daughter Dynamic Duo (Mike and Kelsey Wyrosdick) traveled to Pelham, Alabama to compete in the Buster Britton Memorial Triathlon hosted by Team Magic. Way to go team!! We love seeing these race photos!! We also love that we have local event management companies organizing these events. We have a race report from KPL Podium athlete Hannah Duncan. She recaps her experience with the Super Sprint Triathlon presented by Personal Best Racing:

Up until 3 weeks ago, I had never heard of a "super sprint" triathlon. One of my sisters had sent a message to "the girls" (my mom, youngest sister and myself) trying to rally up a relay team for a sprint triathlon put on by Personal Best Racing. After looking at the options, we ended up finding race distances that suited each of us since there were actually 4 races happening the same day due to rescheduling. My sisters raced a women's only sprint the Wild Rose whose distance favors beginners or those getting back in shape or those that enjoy pouring their heart, soul, sweat, blood and tears out and being done in way under an hour (ahem, Lydia). My mom raced the Tomahawk sprint. This race kicked off the morning with a 150y swim, 10 mile (2 lap) bike, and a 2 lap (5k) run. If you have questions on whether the 10mile, 2 lap bike was 2 laps of 5 miles or 2 laps of 10 miles each lap, imagine the questions the race director got for the super sprint: 90y swim, 5 mile bike, 1.5 mile run...3 times each. Ok, once you get that straight, now imagine the different mats one must run over in order to get appropriate timing splits. That's right, this was a 7:30am tri brain teaser. Muna did a great job, as did the other volunteers, patiently explaining and clarifying the in/out routine. And I believe most of us traversed the mats in the correct order. It was hilariously funny though to be taking off the helmet for the second time in transition while trying to grab my googles only to realize that I couldn't remember whether the run or swim came next...and which lap was I on anyway? Maybe I truly did need that cup of coffee in the morning.

Anyway, the course itself was fun and it was a lovely morning. The bike course was a nice big square. You have some east TN rolling hills with horses watching you whiz by. The run circumvents the Loudon high school campus and has one notable hill. As you crest the top it is completely worth the view to look back over your shoulder at more of those east TN rolling hills with the clouds and morning sun rays littering the sky.

I have three hacks that made a notable difference in my enjoyment of this race. I was quite concerned my hair would be a shambles after a few swim cap, helmet, run, goggle switches. I was right. For the long haired ladies and dudes, suck up the extra weight and put an emergency hair tie on your bike handle or water bottle. I also took three pairs of dry socks. Over the years I've had shoes that I get blisters in and shoes I don't. Currently I have my favorite pair of shoes I've ever owned...but barefoot = blisters. So a few extra seconds each round to put on a pair of dry socks was absolutely worth it. AND when you get sister kudos for the nice variety you picked...well, it's ALL worth it. Lastly, just leave the watch at home. I couldn't figure out how I was going to do those splits and honestly, I can't tell you how much mental focus it takes to remember those little buttons and how much fortitude to ignore the numbers when it's not what you like to see. No more looking down to see an 11:30min/mile time when you were really shooting for 11:21min/mile!!! But if you really really like punching buttons, by all means go ahead and figure out those mats and buttons and have a heyday. At the end of the day, I'd say a "super" is a pretty fun, brain-teaser, laugh at yourself, tri-something-new sort of race. Go get it!

2020 Wild Rose Women’s Sprint Triathlon

Hello family and friends! Time for a little race recap! Once again Muna, Jennifer, Jamie and Keith with Personal Best Racing did a fantastic job organizing and managing a safe and responsible race day. Jamie, I have no clue how you keep the timing straight for one race, much less five. All y’all rock!

I arrived to the race site at my usual super early time. As I’m topping of the air in my tires I find a rear flat (all good the night before). Spare tube no good. Enter Shannon with Smokey’s Mobile Bicycle Repair! He saved the day with a new tube and an adjustment of a loose rear break. All that and still one hour to race time. Plenty of time to pre-ride the 5 mile bike course. Course is awesome. My ability to follow signs… not so much. Get lost twice. Get back to transition with less than 10 minutes to spare. Rack bike, grab googles and cap and head for the pool.

Hang out with the fab Amanda Tingle and Melanie King for a minute. Time to race! I end up at the front of the swim line. Never in my 8 years of racing have I lined up remotely near the front. Before I have time to think I am swimming! Swim a short 150 yards as hard as I can. Out of the pool, clean transition and onto the bike. Head down, bike hard. See my girl Shameka having fun with flags and keeping us all safe and on course. Back from bike, clean flying dismount and onto run. This hurts. It’s hot. Legs protest. Run hard anyway. Don’t barf. Turn for finish line. There’s my girl Kelley! Don’t look like death for photo! Cross finish line. Forget to give my timing chip to Jennifer (Sorry!). Once I could breathe again I give my adrenaline filled post race recap to Kelley and she kindly listens.

This was a race of many firsts for me. My first pre-race bike mechanical. My first time getting lost on a course. My first time lining up in front for the swim. And my very first overall win. As coach Robbie said, “A lot of growth happened at this race”. I kept calm when things didn’t go according to plan and I gave all my body had on that day.

I left the race feeling so energized and happy! Not because of my performance but because of the people. My friends. That is my favorite part of triathlon. Our community. I miss group photos that don’t involve face coverings and distancing. I miss high fives and hugs. I miss post race brunches and banter. But this race gave me more than a glimmer of that pre-pandemic community feeling and I am beyond thankful for it! We have a race report from athlete Douglas Clark:

Social Distancing Dirty Bird Style: Motus Panther Creek

Motus Panther Creek, off road triathlon, takes place inside the confines of the beautiful Panther Creek State Park, Morristown Tennessee. The race consists of an 800m open water swim in Cherokee Lake, a 13 mile mountain bike course, and a 4.2 mile trail run.

The water temperature was in the low 80's but it heated up quickly at the sound of the traditional cannon blast to start the race. The mass start provides one the opportunity to receive some kicks to the arms and elbows to the head if you don't secure yourself a nice patch of open water quickly. The one loop triangular shaped swim course is always laid out nicely...especially after turn one when the sun is no longer an issue.

Transition was set up nicely to allow plenty of social distancing. Minus the soles of my feet complaining about the loose rocks in the transition area it really is a great, shaded location.

The bike trails were completely dry. This was a pleasant surprise given the heavy rains the Knoxville area experienced the day before. The park maintenance staff had done a FANTASTIC job of having the trails in primo condition! In prior years some sections of the bike course have been greatly overgrown with vegetation, which inevitably led to patches of poison ivy cropping up on my arms and legs a few days after the race. But this year.. trails were awesome!! For those of you who have not ridden these trails, and we had some teammates competing in this event for the first time today, I would say this course is quite challenging...always is. There are plenty of loose rocks, lots of roots, and some punchy climbs in the mix to really keep you focused on staying upright and crash free. I was really proud of Bill Beecher, Joseph Hicks, Ronnie Manis, and Doug Ross for their strong outings having never done this course before!

The 4.2 mile run consists of twisty, rooty single track, some double track sections, and one stout, slap in the face climb at about mile 3ish. The dry conditions made the roots and rocks a non-issue today and running under the canopy of trees for 3/4 of the course is really nice. By the completion of the race the air temps were well into the mid 80's.

Overall, this was a great outing for me with an age group 1st finish and 11th overall. I'll take it for not having mountain biked in over a month. Team Zen Evo and KPL / Podium Sports Medicine had great days on the dirt. Derrick Tingle and Nathan Mize set the woods on fire as always with top 10 finishes and the rest of us older dudes were just thankful to leave with no injuries! However, I believe we all placed in our respective age groups!! So hot dawg!! I think Bill said he nicked himself on leg during the bike, but honestly I think he just cut himself shaving 🙂 !! The teams really did perform nicely on a challenging course in hot conditions

Special thanks to Annie and Ryan Roma of Dirty Bird Events for doing their best to make sure this event took place as scheduled. They, along with all of the race volunteers and support crew, really did great at providing enough spacing, etc. to help ensure the participants were socially distanced.

Special thanks to KPL teammates Amanda Tingle and Jenn Gerard for their awesome volunteer work and helping to ensure a successful event!

Special thanks to team sponsor William Norris and Bike and Tri for making sure my bike was well dialed in for the race.

Secret City race recap
6/20/2020

My hometown race, second triathlon I had ever done some 6 (7) years ago. This race occurs 1.5 miles from my house and it is the one I haven’t missed yet.
Before I describe the race let me tell you about a little scare I had one week prior. I was at our family lake house cutting a tree off the deck using a pole saw on a ladder leaned up against the tree. Long story short I fell from the ladder landing on the deck (luckily not going over the railing) mostly on my right shin area. After the screaming and cursing my next thought was, “Am I going to be able to race in one week?”. Good news sports fans, I was up and hobbling about in no time.
Up at the crack of 5am a hearty breakfast of cereal and toast and off to the big pool we go!
It was great to see so many people following Muna’s rules and so willing to participate within the guidelines. A quick check of my temperature and answering the questions and I was in and setup in no time. We had all the racks filled to capacity.
Swim; Ooof, not much to say, I lined up with a few people I knew were relatively close to my current quarantine swim pace and off we went. Kind of a rolling start divided 5 people on the pool deck at a time. I liked this much better than previous versions and didn’t have to pass maybe 5-7 people and only passed by one or two as I recall. Not very fast as compared to all previous attempts, but no one was walking and not much bunching up at the turns. I’m not happy with my swim, but I certainly didn’t do as bad as it could have been. Transition was a long jog over due to the extended transition area so quite a while passed after exiting the pool to get to the bike and I even made up one spot lost in the pool to a slower transitioner (is that a word?)
Bike; On the bike and out of transition almost as fast as I’ve ever done it with just a slight delay remembering where I’d left my bike! I’ve done this bike course many times before and nothing exceptional occurred until the very end when another gentleman in my age group passed me just before transition and then fell at bike dismount. The conditions were great with fog and overcast skies making it a little moist, but comfortable and I managed one of my faster bike splits only a minute and change off my fastest, not bad considering my injury.
Run; This was where I was most worried about the injury flaring up from the previous weekend. I took off and a gentle trot and increased speed until I was pretty much maxed out at the end of my first mile. All systems go. I kept the guy from my age group in sight know he had gone into the pool ahead of me and all I had to do was keep him in sight to finish ahead of him. Turns out he had missed the bike turn around and gone an extra mile and that is how he wound up behind me. Bad for him, lucky for me? I turned in my second fastest 5k split in my history of recording 5k’s? It felt Ok and didn’t hurt too bad after I was done.
4th age group out of 12 (!) Beaten by such notables as Ron Mannis and Michael Yates that I have raced against many times, both of them are absolute machines, and a guy I’m not familiar with (Bradley Cope)that absolutely crushed the run at 22 flat after beating us all on the bike by 90 seconds.
