We have a race report from KPL Podium athlete Hannah Duncan. She recaps her experience with the Super Sprint Triathlon presented by Personal Best Racing:
Up until 3 weeks ago, I had never heard of a "super sprint" triathlon. One of my sisters had sent a message to "the girls" (my mom, youngest sister and myself) trying to rally up a relay team for a sprint triathlon put on by Personal Best Racing. After looking at the options, we ended up finding race distances that suited each of us since there were actually 4 races happening the same day due to rescheduling. My sisters raced a women's only sprint the Wild Rose whose distance favors beginners or those getting back in shape or those that enjoy pouring their heart, soul, sweat, blood and tears out and being done in way under an hour (ahem, Lydia). My mom raced the Tomahawk sprint. This race kicked off the morning with a 150y swim, 10 mile (2 lap) bike, and a 2 lap (5k) run. If you have questions on whether the 10mile, 2 lap bike was 2 laps of 5 miles or 2 laps of 10 miles each lap, imagine the questions the race director got for the super sprint: 90y swim, 5 mile bike, 1.5 mile run...3 times each. Ok, once you get that straight, now imagine the different mats one must run over in order to get appropriate timing splits. That's right, this was a 7:30am tri brain teaser. Muna did a great job, as did the other volunteers, patiently explaining and clarifying the in/out routine. And I believe most of us traversed the mats in the correct order. It was hilariously funny though to be taking off the helmet for the second time in transition while trying to grab my googles only to realize that I couldn't remember whether the run or swim came next...and which lap was I on anyway? Maybe I truly did need that cup of coffee in the morning.
Anyway, the course itself was fun and it was a lovely morning. The bike course was a nice big square. You have some east TN rolling hills with horses watching you whiz by. The run circumvents the Loudon high school campus and has one notable hill. As you crest the top it is completely worth the view to look back over your shoulder at more of those east TN rolling hills with the clouds and morning sun rays littering the sky.
I have three hacks that made a notable difference in my enjoyment of this race. I was quite concerned my hair would be a shambles after a few swim cap, helmet, run, goggle switches. I was right. For the long haired ladies and dudes, suck up the extra weight and put an emergency hair tie on your bike handle or water bottle. I also took three pairs of dry socks. Over the years I've had shoes that I get blisters in and shoes I don't. Currently I have my favorite pair of shoes I've ever owned...but barefoot = blisters. So a few extra seconds each round to put on a pair of dry socks was absolutely worth it. AND when you get sister kudos for the nice variety you picked...well, it's ALL worth it. Lastly, just leave the watch at home. I couldn't figure out how I was going to do those splits and honestly, I can't tell you how much mental focus it takes to remember those little buttons and how much fortitude to ignore the numbers when it's not what you like to see. No more looking down to see an 11:30min/mile time when you were really shooting for 11:21min/mile!!! But if you really really like punching buttons, by all means go ahead and figure out those mats and buttons and have a heyday. At the end of the day, I'd say a "super" is a pretty fun, brain-teaser, laugh at yourself, tri-something-new sort of race. Go get it!
