Great tips here from the Beach Safety Division! While the Pier is certainly a visible landmark, it can actually be quite difficult to tell how far away from it you are!
Instead, make sure you and your family know to use the many Rescue Tube Stations provided by the Town. With street names listed at the top of each sign, and stations posted at every Beach Access Location, helping prevent missing persons is just one more feature they provide!
JULY 18, 2026 • PREVENTING MISSING PERSONS
Getting separated from your family in a new place is something that can happen to ANYONE, including children and adults, regardless of how much you are "paying attention."
Thankfully, here’s a few ways you can take the fear out of finding a loved one:
✅ KNOW YOUR LOCATION! Find the nearest Rescue Tube Station, located on the beach side of every access, and make a note of the street listed on top of its sign. Make this your "family meeting spot" to come back to if anyone gets lost or separated.
✅ TAKE A PHOTO with everyone at your meeting spot, so that if a search is needed, responders will have updated images to use.
✅ DON'T RELY on phones or landmarks like the OKI Pier to navigate the beach, as phones can be lost or damaged, and it is very difficult to judge distances between points on the beach -- Use the Rescue Tube Stations instead!
✅ ASK FOR HELP! Make sure children (and adults) know it’s okay to ask for help, and call 9-1-1 if needed.
By following (and SHARING) these steps, you can help ensure everyone having fun on the beach goes home safely, TOGETHER!
