Been a bit slower in the rod shop lately since I went back to work at my regular job. I got a package this week thats got me wanting to get back to building again. About a year ago I was a ble to buy some of the last st.croix rod blanks that were on clearance at the time. 3 were delivered damaged. Well with the covid and all, it took some time to get them back to st.croix so they could warranty them. But my wait is over! They are here! And 1 is already sold! Looking forward to building on an awesome blank.

Got some more work done on the MHX rod today. The decorative spiral butt wrap is progressing nicely. I've said it before...

Been working this new grip through the progression of sanding and putting down multiple layers of finish. I believe it has 3 layers of permagloss and 4 layers of Hitena rod finish epoxy on it. I decided to go ahead and finish the EVA butt cap for more of a complete look.

Still been working with this experimental fly rod grip. A mix of Syncork and Cactus2 wave cork. Here it is attached to the rod blank sanded and a few coats of permagloss to seal it up. Not sure if I wanna leave it like this or a light sanding to give it a matte finish...what do you think?

This is a 9' 9wt St.Croix 4pc. blank with a mahogany color. It has a standard full wells cork fly grip with a 4.5 " integrated cork rear grip. The reel seat and guide train is all Alps in a black finish to give it a sleek look. Hitena thread and G4 epoxy finish wrap it all together to make another fine king salmon rod.

Up next is another 9' 10wt. Fly rod for built on a Rainshadow 2pc. Rx6 rod blank. It has Titanium snake guides wrapped with Hitena thread and finished with G4 epoxy rod finish. Add to that an Alps reel seat and Winn fly grips it should make for a comfortable day of king salmon fishing.

Just wrapped up another salmon rod build! This is a 9 foot -4 piece- 9wt. Fly Rod. It's built on a deep burgundy colored St. CROIX rod blank with natural cork rod grips and a rubberized butt cap. The hardware includes an Alps reel seat and trim ring, Alps stripping guides and Forecast snake guides. Wrapping the guides with Hitena mahogany brown and Pac Bay metallic orange for the trim really gives this a subtle elegance. The epoxy finish is a tag team effort from Hitena for the base coat. Then I had my first chance to use the new Gen4 epoxy for the top coats. Absolute harmony between the two finishes.
John Wilburn Im sure will be bringing in many, many salmon with this beauty of a rod. Enjoy!
