The loudest fireworks on the market are known as salute shells, mines and rockets, which are intended to be deafening, rather than beautiful. Sound waves from these blasts spread out from the initial explosion and the resulting concussion can have negative impacts on the hearts and nervous systems of wildlife, as well as domesticated animals. Actually, all biological systems are affected negatively by the noise impact.
Blasts from these fireworks can disrupt herding cycles, chase birds from their nests, and cause both birds and animals to abandon their young. They can also produce acute sensory overload for nocturnal species causing collisions with buildings and exhaustion from prolonged flight. Owls and bats rely on acute hearing and echolocation to navigate, which unpredictable sonic booms can damage, interrupting their ability to hunt for food for long periods of time.
The resulting trauma from these blasts can last well over a week. Foraging is interrupted. Often, birds, in particular, cannot compensate for the massive energy expenditure used during panic flight, causing them to weaken and die.

Mike Elam’s, St Charles County Councilman, thoughts on fireworks…

“I love fireworks. I always will. I want families across St. Charles County to celebrate America’s 250th birthday with all the red, white, and blue they can put in the sky. I want kids looking up in awe, neighbors gathering together, and families showing their patriotic pride in a way that is joyful, beautiful, and memorable.

And I think a whole lot of dog lovers feel the same way. They love a great fireworks display. They love the oohs and awws. They love seeing the sky light up on a summer night. What they do not love is watching their dog start shaking, hiding under the bed, or crashing into furniture because something outside sounded like a bomb went off.

That is the difference.

This is not about stopping fireworks. It is about stopping the bomb-style blasts that are all noise and no beauty. The kind that do not make people look up and smile. The kind that make people jump and say, “Oh my God, what just blew up outside?”

That is not celebration. That is disruption.

If it lights up the night with color, pride, and patriotism, that is part of the tradition people love. But if it is just a blast that terrifies dogs, panics horses and livestock, rattles neighborhoods, and brings real distress to some of our veterans, then we ought to be able to say: that is not the kind of fireworks we need.

My position is simple: celebrate America’s 250th birthday with all the color and splendor you want. Fill the sky with red, white, and blue. Enjoy the fireworks that bring families together and make kids say “wow.”

But let’s leave behind the bomb blasts that add noise instead of joy.

This is not anti-fireworks. It is pro-celebration, pro-neighbor, pro-dog, pro-veteran, and pro-common sense.

We can be patriotic, festive, and respectful all at the same time.

Keep the beauty. Lose the blast.”

Thank you to all of our boarders and leasers that came out and joined us!

I, of course, was too busy to take any pictures, so these are all “borrowed” 😄 Feel free to add more in the comments!
