This league was started with the intention of creating a fun, welcoming space for anyone that wanted to strap wheels to their feet and learn how to play an unorthodox contact sport with folx of different walks of life, in a corner of Maryland that we felt really needed it.
We knocked on many doors and waited on a few empty maybes until we briefly found home in a small (too small) of a space that offered a sportcourt floor and an indoor tree house that our children could play in while we confused gym-goers with whistles and left turns.
When we found that it couldn't house our derby family anymore we found refuge in a soft, wooden landing that had bones of leagues generations before us. This space gave us room to sprint, bridge our packs, and find ways to teach a sport to new talent. This rink has recently decided to end their legacy in the rollerskating community, thus leaving us without a home..
In the months prior to this news, there was much consideration and deliberating as to what would become of our own legacy. We, unfortunately, have decided to do the same. As of the end of November, The Chesapeake Baes will be concluding not only the 2025 season but also our league.
We want to make an enormous thank you to everyone that put their (quite literal) blood, sweat, and tears into the Baes. The skaters, the coaches, the volunteers, and loved ones that all expressed support. The neighboring leagues that had our backs from the very start, invited us to fun themed scrimmages, and made sure we had the numbers to have successful practices. We truly could not have made it these few years without you all. We love you and we cannot wait to see where life takes our Baes within/without/wherever with roller derby. π©΅ππ€
