Jane shows up to her 6am session like clockwork and she's been doing it for 250 workouts now.

Years ago, a serious accident left Jane with a back injury that still doesn't always cooperate. But instead of letting that stop her, she's built a routine that with the right modifications let her train smart, get strong, and keep showing up every day. She always feels better leaving the gym than when she comes in!

Today we're celebrating Andrea, who just hit her 100th workout at Big Day Fitness (and she only spends half of the year in MA, so that's a lot of workouts!).

When Andrea started, her knee had been giving her trouble for so long that she'd actually stopped working out altogether. Now a year+ later, her knee swells less, feels stronger, and she's doing things she genuinely thought were off the table for good.

Her "why" the whole time was her grandkids. She wants to be active, healthy, and able to keep up with them for years to come, and she's doing everything that is in her hands to make that happen.

After her success, her husband Lou joined too, and now they can keep each other accountable πŸ’ͺ

Bone on Bone" Doesn't Mean Game Over

At 17, Maria was told by an orthopedic doctor that she had no cartilage in her knee (bone on bone) and was given a list of everything she could no longer do: no running, no jumping, no yoga, no sitting cross-legged.

15 years later? She just hiked a 4,000-ft mountain for 7 hours straight.

What changed? Strength training. By building the muscles around her knee, she gave her joint the support it was missing, and got her life back.

On this week's episode, Bobby and Maria dug into a concept we use with members all the time: the joint-by-joint approach. Knee pain doesn't always start at the knee. Sometimes it's a stiff ankle or a tight hip forcing your knee to do work it was never designed for.

The takeaway: a scary diagnosis is information, not a life sentence. Pair medical care with the right strength program, and a lot of "you'll never be able to" turns into "watch me."

Big Day is growing, and we want you to meet our newest coach, Ian! πŸ‘‹

Ian grew up in New Fairfield, Connecticut and fell in love with the gym at just 14 years old. That passion never left him, and it led him straight to Endicott College, where he just graduated this spring with his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. Safe to say, this is not just a job for Ian. This is his calling.

He also has a personal journey that we think a lot of you are going to connect with. Ian has his own inspiring weight loss story, and that experience shapes the way he coaches -with empathy, real understanding, and zero judgment.

When he's not in the gym, you'll find him outside fishing, woodworking, or just exploring wherever the day takes him.

Oh, and for reasons we have not fully investigated yet, Ian knows an alarming amount about poison ivy. We'll just leave that one there. πŸ˜‚

Strength training is one of the most important things a woman over 40 can do for her health. Not because of how it looks, but because of what it protects.

Strength training protects muscle mass, bone density, insulin sensitivity, metabolism, balance and the ability to recover from a fall (and many more). These things start declining during perimenopause, and strength training is one of the most effective tools we have to slow that down.

Maria's book has a full section on why this matters so much at this stage of life - backed by research, written in a simple way that is easy to understand, and framed around what actually works for women over 40 (spoiler: it's not long cardio sessions).

Form. Consistency. Getting stronger without beating yourself up... But some of the most important conversations happen between exercises - about sleep, about hormones, about feeling like a stranger in your own body.
