We had so much fun today! We started out the morning with a clinic for the new skiers and their dogs. Roberts Farm has some equipment, and I always keep extras in my car(thanks to Kathy at Nooksack Racing Supply!) so we were able to get them all outfitted properly. Ike headed out to mark the 2k course and waited to capture them in action. He said he didn't see a single one who wasn't smiling!

The experienced racers headed out on the 5k course, with Peter & Cashew leading the way. Ed & George caught and passed Nate & Bruiser, and you can see in Ike's pictures how determined he was indeed! After that the 2 of them stayed together until the end. Now they're happily napping!

Once everyone got their awards and snacks, the boys and I skied out to pick up all the course markings. The trail is in about as good condition as it could be! Thank you to Lee and Jeff for hosting today's event. We greatly appreciate all their efforts!

Roberts Farm hosted another skijor yesterday and the weather was perfect for running dogs - bluebird skies and chilly! Our friend Melissa came to check out the trails, and got roped into handling. She was a great sport and it was awesome to visit! We really appreciated the help!

Before the racing started, there was a clinic for novices. Lady did a fantastic job pulling them slowly around the trails, and helping them get confident on their skis. Nobody could believe that she's almost 12 and just started skijoring last year herself. She's such a good girl!

I also introduced an excellent skier who had never hooked up to a dog before to Nooksack Racing Supply because she needed a skijor belt. I always carry extras with us, and happily loaned her one! She's hooked. They really are the best!

Finally, it was time to line up. Ed and George ran their fastest race together! They posted a scorching time, and came in 2nd place. Unfortunately, Nate and Bruiser had a crash. Neither of them got injured, but they were kinda shook up by it. They pulled it together though, and finished in 3rd place.

The snow is getting really thin, and there is bare ground in places. Everyone was extra determined to have a great time today because it might be our last race of the season. I really wish that winter would come back!

This morning's skijor at Roberts Farm in Norway, Maine was so much fun! We saw great friends and dogs, some that we haven't seen since last year's races. We were planning on going to watch Nate, so I was surprised yesterday when Ed asked me to sign him up. He hasn't skied in years, but he figured he could get safely around the course with quiet li'l Buffy. She took one look at the crowd, though, and was like, “No way. Nope. Not happening.” So, against his better judgment, Ike helped him hook up to George, who loves nothing better than to race. George may not know much, but he knows that if you're led to the line and someone gives you a countdown, “5…4…3…2…1!” - then you run like HELL!! If there's something hooked behind you, then you pull it along with you! And that's how Ed found himself in 3rd place, just ahead of Maggie & Pilot. Woohoo!! Congrats to Jay & Cruz on their win, and Nate & Bruiser(his first time skijoring!) for coming in 2nd place. A Team Nooksack Racing podium sweep!!
All of the teams did awesome, and we’re already looking forward to the next event! Thank you to Lee and all the volunteers. The trails are in amazing condition!
For anyone interested in trying this with their dog, Sara does a clinic prior to the start of the race, and there is even time for practice. Do not be afraid to try. It's so much fun!
Once the crowd had thinned, Lady & Nate led Buffy & Ed out on the trail so she could have a good learning experience. Now, the dogs are resting, Ed & I are heading home, Ike's reading, and Nate's still out there somewhere skiing…

Since the canicross season is so short, we decided to run twice this weekend. Whew! The dogs are fine, but I'm wiped out! I drove up to Maine both mornings, first to Phippsburg, and then to Norway. Foliage is at its next level of peak and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride!

On Saturday morning we raced around Hermit Island Campground to support Marine Mammals of Maine, a wonderful organization that helps seals. It was a beautiful day to run on the coast. Nate and George came in second place overall, first dog team. Woohoo! Go team!! Buffy and I came in second to last because I was busy taking pictures and videos. Our actual running time was good, though, according to my Strava which pauses when I do. It knows that I'm easily distracted!

On Sunday morning we raced at Roberts Farm, our favorite course. This time Buffy got to run with Nate and win! She really liked that because she got a tennis ball for a prize!! We didn't tell her that ALL the 4-legged runners got a ball, but that her prize for winning was that pretty pumpkin. She wouldn't have appreciated that quite so much! Anyway...I walked the course with Lady who would've felt left out if she didn't get to go, but isn't fit enough to run those hills. We had a blast! Her tail never stopped wagging.

Our team may have gotten smaller over the past year, but I love that we still get to do all these events with our dogs, and the great friends we have made!

Canicross season has finally started up again! Ike & Buffy ran the 'Four in the Forest' race with me & George this morning! It was such a fun event with good friends. The course was tough, full of mud, rocks, roots, and grassy fields - all the things that make cross country running great! We got filthy, and the dogs loved it! We're already looking forward to next year!

Yesterday we competed at the Dixon's Revenge Canicross in Somersworth, NH. Graham and Nate came down from Maine to run with George and Bruiser for us, and they had an awesome race! This was Graham & George's second attempt at the course and they held off Nate & Bruiser all the way to the line! Woohoo! That was fun to watch!!

'Course I only saw it on video because while they were racing, Lady and I were having a fun adventure at the back of the pack. She is an older dog who belonged to my late parents. Nate adopted her this winter, and introduced her to the world of dog powered sports via skijoring. She loved it! This was her first canicross and she had the most fun of anyone out there! She wallowed in ALL the mud puddles, visited with all the people and just trotted along with her tail wagging the whole time. It was fun to run with her! (Buffy was spayed this week, so she had to sit this one out.)

Thank you Ed for handling and taking pictures & videos, and Lynda and Nate II for also sharing pictures and videos. It was awesome to see everyone!! (Video in comments)

Our friend, Greg Legier was at the canicross on Sunday morning and got this great video!

You can see the sheer joy that Buffy is feeling in this video. 2 years ago she ran it, but was attached to me which is kinda boring for a speedy dog, I'm sure. Last year she got loose and ran it on her own with the top finishers at the front of the non-canicross 5k. So this year she was like, "Come on, Nate! Let's GO! I can show you the way!!"

While we're traveling, Nate & Buffy represented our team and placed 3rd at the 5k canicross at the Trail Festival at Pineland Farms yesterday. Well done team! They sure stood out with their bright Nooksack Racing gear!

I apologize - I just realized that I never updated this page!

George helped us get Buffy home on Christmas Eve. I got a call from Granite State Dog Recovery that she'd been caught on camera near the trap we'd set, so we took George out on a 20' leash to the area. I squatted quietly at the end of it while letting him do his thing - sniffing, marking, etc. - while ignoring the rustling of leaves nearby. Finally, that rustling turned into footfalls as she trotted out! I avoided looking at her, continuing to watch George, until she came up beside me and started licking my face. It was so hard not to grab at her for fear of spooking her, but then she jumped into my lap like she always does, and I snapped the leash on her in a flash! She was so happy to see us, but very cold, hungry and lame because her paw pads were worn down. She had run almost 10 miles of pavement on the previous Sunday based on pictures from reports of sightings! She wasn't dehydrated, though, because she'd been hiding out near a brook.

We immediately started her on dewormer and fought our natural inclination to feed her ALL the food. Her appetite is good, and a few small meals each day have done the trick! Her coat is shiny again, and her energy level is back. Her new favorite things are chicken nuggets and the electric heater. She's now a velcro dog, showing no inclination to leave my side!

Buffy's homecoming was such a relief and felt like a Christmas miracle. Unfortunately, the next morning, I received the call that my dad had passed away. I'll be forever grateful to this li'l dog who ran away, though, because I called him right away to tell him she was safe, and he was thrilled by the story! George was his buddy, and the fact that he was the hero rescue dog made him so happy. Our last conversation was a fun one and ended with, "Merry Christmas Eve! See ya tomorrow!"

The support from our community both near and far has been incredible. It was an extremely stressful time, but we definitely felt the love. I cannot ever thank Granite State Dog Recovery enough for all of their help. Please consider donating to them. You can set them up in your Amazon Smile account so they get some funds every time you shop. Thank you!

Love and hugs to all from Ed, Buffy, George, Mini, Bruiser(Who stayed home and missed ALL the excitement!), the cats - Houston and Rusty(who really don't care😄), and myself. (Dawn) ❤️
