BSB Family:
As many of you may have heard, we lost a terrific teammate, a loving friend, and a beautiful soul this week, as Dana Owen Turczak lost her courageous battle with cancer.
The news is so heartbreaking and hard to take, because despite Danaβs diagnosis, her perseverance and fighting spirit had us all believing we had so much time left with her, and so many memories left to make. We were all looking forward to a long future of summers on the sandy courts at Calf Pasture beach, and endless coolers of beers crushed at the parking lot. We even imagined Dana and Andy, 20 years from now, joining the rest of the BSB moms and dads on the sidelines to cheer on Troy and the rest of the next generation of BSB 2.0. Sadly, unfairly, we have been robbed of these future memories, but nothing can take the memories weβve already made.
We will remember Dana as a founding member of the team, who may or may not have been immediately on board with the team name (perhaps we need some βHater Blockersβ alternate throwback jerseys!) We will remember her for her joy, her boundless enthusiasm, her pep talks, and her subtle encouragement to get our sh*t together. Weβll remember her for her uncanny ability to rock designer sunglasses during play without ever breaking a pair. And of course, weβll remember her for her overhand hammer of a serve, perfected and honed through years of practice, and supercharged as a mom by carrying Troy on her mighty shoulder.
The team will never be the same without Dana, but sheβll never be truly gone if we find a way to remember her and honor her memory. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, this yearβs volleyball season is unfortunately very much in doubt. However, Iβm sure we will all see each other again soon, one way or another, and when we do, we will honor Dana the best way we can; as a team, and as family.
