Gavin has been with me from the very beginning. He was there when I started teaching BJJ at the YMCA and every other iteration we’ve gone through.

He was 9 when he started, and for the vast majority of those years he was the only youth student I had. He never complained, he always showed up and year after year. And as time rolled on he got big, strong and good at Jiu Jitsu.
•

This August we wished Gavin good luck as he embarks on his first year of college. Pearson BJJ has never existed without Gavin present. I always knew the time would come but it was surreal saying goodbye for now.

Best of luck at school this year Gavin. I know you’ll make us all proud. OSS!

Another year has come to pass and another class of Carleton graduates will be moving on from our Northfield Jiu Jitsu family. It’s always a great pleasure to get to know the students who attend the colleges in town however It’s always a little sad when you have to say goodbye.

Thank you Ryan and Gabe for spending so much time on the mats the past few years. I will miss our conversations about Jiu Jitsu on car rides to and from practice as well as the hard training sessions. I look forward to seeing what life has in store for you both.

Recently, a young member was able to put his years of training into action to defend himself in a school yard altercation. When another kid unexpectedly jumped on top of him and pinned him down on the ground, the student’s BJJ instincts kicked in, and he was able to use his learned skills to free himself and get back on his feet.

Walking away from the incident, the student shared that he was able to recognize that his jiu jitsu training kicked in without any hesitation and that it left him feeling accomplished and proud. He was quick to say that he knew the situation could have gone very differently if it wasn’t for his jiu jitsu training. He was able to handle a tricky situation quickly and safely, and without getting in trouble for any sort of uncontrolled reaction to a physical threat.

The experience has helped him recognize his own strength and skill and has given his confidence a meaningful boost, which is exactly why he started his jiu jitsu journey in the first place.
•

Competitions and medals are cool and all but it’s stories like this that remind you the true importance of martial arts.
