A major 4-phase branding effort is currently underway in the athletic facilities at Norwich University and our WOMEN'S BASKETBALL program is being prominently remembered and displayed in the completion of phase one!

PHOTO 1 - This wall proudly displays three "Legends of Norwich" and it includes Dr. Emily Oliver who attended Norwich from 2015-2019. Emily was a four-year member of our women's basketball program, as well as a four-year member of both volleyball and softball. Emily is the only student-athlete from Norwich who was chosen as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference - (GNAC) Women of the Year. Since graduation, Emily has completed both her medical degree at the University of Vermont and an MBA degree from Norwich concurrently.

PHOTO 2 - The wall that displays all of the inductees in the Norwich Athletic Hall of Fame also prominently includes a photo of former women's basketball player Aliah Curry. Aliah attended Norwich from 2011-2015 and graduated as the all-time leading scorer, both men's and women's, in Norwich basketball history with 2,267 career points. This total also makes her the all-time leading scorer in Great Northeast Athletic Conference - (GNAC) history. Aliah is one of only two Norwich athletes in the GNAC Hall of Fame.

PHOTO 3 - Inside of the Hall of Fame room, the display of photographs of past student-athletes includes one of Heather LeBlanc-Nunez. Heather attended Norwich from 2013-2017 and is one of only three women's basketball players in Norwich history to graduate with over 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. She is also a former assistant coach for our program. Also included in this picture, in her softball uniform, is Heather LaBranche Schwager (2000-2004), who played two seasons for our program and was an outstanding softball player.

PHOTO 4 - Finally, a wall in the Hall of Fame room proudly displays the images of three female student-athletes who each are connected to our program. The softball player is three-sport athlete Emily Oliver. The basketball player is Aliah Curry. And, the volleyball player is Brianna Dawson. A record-setting volleyball player, Brianna played her senior season, 2019-2020, with our program.

One of the annual highlights at the banquet are the awards that our players give to one another. Each member of the program has the name of another and are tasked with presenting them with a personal award. It can be humorous, serious, or touching, but, regardless, the presentation of these is a definite highlight of the program.

Another tradition is to present our seniors with a special plaque to commemorate their time in our program. The plaque is designed to hold a piece of basketball net and, following the banquet, the entire group travels together up to Andrews Hall for these seniors to cut down the last net of their college career. It is this souvenir that is hung on their special plaque.

Finally, the group will pose together for a final team picture. This year, unfortunately, the group was thin as 5 different members were away competing for the university on another athletic team on the day of the banquet.

With graduation and the close of another academic year, it affords us the opportunity to look back on a couple end of the year items.

Our NU WBB team banquet was held on Sunday, 04/14, in the Milano Ballroom on campus. Players, families, and invited guests gathered that day to remember and celebrate the past season. The banquet began with the team gathering together for one last time for the blessing that has been used prior to the beginning of each of our contests. A delicious, catered meal followed. The program for the evening consisted then of team awards, players awards, and recognition. Four special team awards are regularly given out. They are: the GENIUS AWARD - presented to the player(s) with the highest GPA - (awarded this year to Maren McGinn and Jessie Zimmerman); the MOST IMPROVED PLAYER - (presented this year to Sage MacAuley); the BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER - (awarded to Silas Bernier); and the COACHES AWARD - (presented to Maren McGinn).

In addition, the team presented a gift to their retiring head coach, Mark Zacher.
