Hello all! 🚴🏽‍♂️

This is about to be a bit of a serious post, but I invite you to read it through to the end for the sake of our shared community, however meaningful it may be to you.

As the last member of the Bike Kitchen on campus, I would like to ask our community of mechanics and bike riders/lovers/enthusiasts/hobbyists to reflect on the ways the pandemic has affected access to leisure. Biking may seem like a fun skill for everyone, but we should keep in mind the ways that class, race, and nationality structure our access to fun – but also autonomy.

After the end of Spring Break, several students in the area were left without adequate transportation, which has opened up the Bike Kitchen to a Spring and Summer ethos that is not just about RENTING bikes – but about helping and being in connection with community. Therefore, I would like to again extend the offer of no-cost borrows of bikes for Smithies in the area who need transportation. Please email me at [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any inquiries about bike usage in the valley and how I can best support you.

Lastly, I ask you directly, and most importantly, to contribute to the fund linked below for low-income and first-generation Smith students. If it is at all possible, if the Bike Kitchen has ever lowered your costs when it comes to biking, if it has ever replaced a part for free, or oiled your chain, or taught you something new – because we believe in a collectivist world of growth and not profit – please consider donating some of your money to those who are most in need!

Love 💕,
The Bike Kitchen

We will be open tonight! 8-10PM as usual.

Secondly, thank you all for a wonderful, if abbreviated, semester. Many of our members are leaving or have already left campus, meaning that while the BK will not close permanently its function will be severely limited in the upcoming weeks. Continue to message/email/reach out to us if you have any concerns.

Best,
The Bike Kitchen

03/11/2020

An update: The BK will be open for normal hours on Friday but you may also return your bike by locking it nearby (perhaps on the Talbot basement rail) and notifying us by email that you have done so!

Hello everyone!

Due to the unfortunate news that Smith is (as far as we know) closing after Spring break, any bike renters that are leaving campus for the semester must return their bikes as soon as possible. Open Hours will possibly cease after break, possibly not if there are enough members to manage the Kitchen. If you are staying and would like to keep your bike, please contact us and we will work it out from there. Email us or FB message us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Be well,
The Bike Kitchen

Hello BK Enthusiasts! If you're still looking for a summer job, please check out this opportunity from The American Youth Foundation -- Merrowvista. See the job description below.

If interested, contact Sydney Smith at [email protected] or 603-539-6607 x2023. Please reach out with any questions whatsoever!

_____________

Regarding the Job

The American Youth Foundation-Merrowvista is a nonprofit outdoor and experiential education center specializing in youth development and character building for young people ages 8-18. We are a co-ed organization that runs onsite residential programming and wilderness adventure trips, all with the focus of helping young people discover and develop the best in who they are.
Set on over 600 acres in the pristine Ossipee Mountains of New Hampshire, Merrowvista draws you into a life that is uncomplicated and filled with excitement and powerful community.

We are currently hiring many different positions—onsite and wilderness trip leaders (counselors), a waterfront coordinator, specialists (waterfront, sailing, woodworking, drivers, out camping equipment), and more. Our staff come to us from all over the United States and the world. While they bring an uncommon diversity and vibrance to the community, they all have one thing in common—a real desire to make a positive impact in the life of our young people.

If you are interested in applying, check out our job opportunities here: http://ayf.com/jobs/mv/

I know from first-hand experience that there are few jobs in the world that are as rewarding—the work we do here is an uncommon combination of working outside, having a tangible sense of purpose and meaning while being a mentor and role model for the young people we serve.
Additionally, through our extensive staff training and during the summer months, you will gain transferable soft and hard skills that you will be able to carry with you to all future jobs. You will receive training in large and small group facilitation, social and emotional learning techniques, group management and dynamics, assessing and managing risk, in the moment critical thinking, building intentional teams, along with the hard skill training within your designated job area.

Merrowvista staff are provided housing and a stipend, as well as paid days off (position dependent).
We invite you to come join our team as we create a community where we help young people thrive.
Applications and more information can be found at http://ayf.com/jobs/mv/. If you have additional questions please don’t hesitate to reach out at 603-539-6607 or by emailing us at [email protected].

About Us
We’re a nonprofit youth development organization that engages thousands of youth year round through community & school programs, summer programs, and leadership conferences at our beautiful properties in New Hampshire (Merrowvista) and Michigan (Miniwanca).
The American Youth Foundation inspires people to discover and develop their personal best, to seek balance in mental, physical, social and spiritual/reflective living, and to make a positive difference in their communities and in the wider world.

The AYF’s motto, ‘My own self, At my very best, All the time’ is the framework for discovery and growth within our programs. One of the most powerful aspects of AYF programming is the intentional creation of communities, where young people feel welcome to be their own self, where they are encouraged to discover more about who they are and what they are capable of. It is here, in our beautiful locations and set apart from their typical routines, where our participants are given the opportunity to experience a change of pace, engaging both with the natural world and the growing communities around them.

Our site is located at 147 Canaan Road, Center Tuftonboro, NH, 03816

Hi friends!

BK is closing for tonight (28th) and Monday (2nd of March)!!!

Friday out of respect for Night at Your Museum and how big of a social event it is on this campus. Monday because we want to have some quality time with the bikes before we get back to renting! So if you were gonna come in this Friday or next Monday, check the spreadsheet again to see what days you are booked to come in!

Love,
The BK!

Hi all! Sorry for the hiatus – we've been going through our backlog of rental returns and making sure the bikes are all good for the Spring semester!

Great news: Open Hours are starting NEXT MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17! They will be from 8-10PM on both Monday and Friday, and continuing after that!

As next Monday draws nearer, we'll send out updates about how to get involved/rent a bike this Spring. Unfortunately, due to the volume of demand on campus versus the amount of labor our volunteer mechanics can produce, we're gonna try a new system of capping how many people we see per Open Hours session. We'll have a way for people to register by email to RSVP. More details soon!

Love! 💕

Hi y'all! No open hours tonight because of the snow! Also, if you rented a bike this Fall from the BK, know that Saturday is the last day to return it for the season! Bring it by anytime during Saturday's open hours or before. If you're bringing it by when we're closed, leave it by the door and shoot us an email when you've deposited it!

Love,
The BK

Hi folks! There's been a petition going around about getting Mass DCR to plow the Amherst-Hadley-Northampton section of a local bike trail. As you may know, lots of people use the trail every single day to go to places along Route 9 and in Amherst, Hadley, and Northampton! Usually, after first snow, most of this trail is inaccessible as it doesn't get plowed. Help us CHANGE that by signing the attached petition and sharing!

Do you exercise, walk with friends or ride your bicycle during the winter? Would you use the rail trail if it was plowed and maintained regularly after winter

11/19/2019

No open hours tonight, sorry! Mechanics are taking a mental health day 😌🌸 On that note, everyone take care of yourself and prioritize yourself and your health over institutions/work as much as you are able to!
