Before you plan another week the same way you planned this one, ask yourself:

Am I managing my time, or am I finally managing my focus?

Am I reacting to whatever lands on my calendar, or am I intentionally running a system I built?

That question is the whole game.

You can't manage time. You can't slow it, stop it, or speed it up.

What you can manage is your focus.

That's the entire difference between the leaders who scale and the leaders who don’t. That's why the old advice, work harder, wake up earlier, do more, was never going to fix this. You don't have a time problem. You have a focus problem, and a focus problem needs a system, not more effort.

“I don't have enough time.”

I used to say these five words every week. Early in my career, I packed my calendar like it was a badge of honor – meeting after meeting, back to back, no room to think. I told myself I had no control over it. I blamed whoever booked over an existing meeting, then felt guilty for feeling that way, because no matter what I did, I was letting someone down.

So I ran faster, worked harder, told myself I needed to do more.

But if you don't catch that pattern early, it costs you more than time. It costs you the trust of the people waiting on you to lead, because a leader who's always behind can't be the one setting the pace.

If you disappeared completely for a week starting tomorrow, would your team have what they need? Or would your vacation just be working from a different location?

Being physically on a beach and being present on that beach are two completely different things. And the gap between them isn't about willpower.

Presence is the ability to be 100% wherever you are. Not 80% there while 20% runs numbers in your head. That's not a skill you're born with. It's a skill you build the same way you build any other one. Through practice.

Summer's the one stretch all year where the pace actually lets up enough to read something that isn't a status update or a board deck. And the leaders who grow the fastest don't read more than everyone else. They read differently.

These are the books that actually changed how I think, not just what I know, including three I reread every single summer.

Pick one of these up this summer, not to check it off a list, but because the leaders who keep growing are the ones who never stopped being curious.

Before you head out on vacation, do one thing for me. Throw one of these in your bag.

Summer's the one stretch all year where the pace actually lets up enough to read something that isn't a status update or a board deck. And the leaders who grow the fastest don't read more than everyone else. They read differently.

Today I'm handing you the books that actually changed how I think, not just what I know, including three I reread every single summer, on purpose, not because I forgot them: https://youtu.be/LYfeXqmjI4g?si=TxqYEjPot4tOuS1j

When I'm stuck on something real, I go for a walk. No phone, no music, nothing to react to. Half the moves I've made in this business didn't happen at my desk. They happened outside it, away from the noise everyone else was standing in.

The people who eventually get called great thinkers didn't wait for the promotion to start thinking that way. They were already doing it while everyone else was still reacting to the noise.
