The words we repeat to ourselves matter.

When we intentionally practice supportive thoughts like “I love who I am,” we are giving our minds something new to come back to; especially when self-doubt gets loud.

Writing it over and over is not just about the words on the paper. It is about practicing a kinder inner voice, strengthening self-worth and reminding yourself that the way you speak to yourself matters.

What you repeatedly tell yourself can help shape what you begin to believe.

Today’s reminder: I love who I am. ...And I am going to keep practicing believing it.

Art can be more than creating ~ it can give us a way to pause, notice and express what is happening inside.

Here are 3 simple art-based coping prompts I use:

🌬️ Draw Your Breath ~ let your lines follow the rhythm of your breathing, helping you slow down and bring attention to the present moment.

👀 Find the Objects ~ look at your lines and shapes and see what hidden objects or images you can find. This shifts attention, encourages focus and gets your imagination working.

🎨 Draw How You Feel Right Now ~ without worrying about what it “should” look like, use colors, lines, shapes or images to show how you feel in that moment. It can help build emotional awareness and give feelings another way to be expressed.

There is no right or wrong way to do these. The goal is not a perfect picture; it is using creativity as a tool to check in with yourself, slow down and cope in the moment.

More than art… tools you can carry into everyday life.

Have you ever tried drawing a self-portrait without worrying if it actually looks like you?

This is my self-portrait. And when I create one, it helps me see different versions of myself that I do not always notice or recognize in everyday life.

A self-portrait does not have to be realistic or “perfect.” It can be a doodle, simple lines, bold colors, symbols or an abstract version of YOU.

Creating a self-portrait can help with:

♥︎ Self-awareness ~ noticing different parts of yourself
♥︎ Self-expression ~ expressing feelings or personality without needing words
♥︎ Mindfulness ~ slowing down, observing and being present
♥︎ Confidence ~ letting go of perfection and creating freely
♥︎ Self-acceptance ~ looking at yourself with curiosity instead of criticism
♥︎ Emotional expression ~ allowing what is happening on the inside to come out through art

For me, it is interesting to see which version of myself shows up on the paper:

♡ Sometimes it reflects how I am feeling. ♡ Sometimes it brings out something I had mot noticed about myself at all.

A self-portrait is not always about drawing what you look like.... Sometimes it is about discovering how you see yourself, how you feel & even who you are becoming.

That is one of the reasons I believe art can be so much more than art.

Have you ever drew a self-portrait?

Sometimes the smallest change in how we ask a question can make the biggest difference in connection.

Instead of questions that can be answered with a quick “fine” or “yes,” try giving your child space to share a little more. Open-ended questions encourage them to reflect, express themselves and feel that you are genuinely interested in their world.

And remember: you do not need a long heart-to-heart every day. Even a few intentional minutes of curiosity and connection can help strengthen trust and communication over time.

Ask. ♥︎ Listen. ♥︎ Stay curious. ♥︎ Connection grows from there. ♥︎

PARENT TIP: Connection does not have to take all day.

When the kids are home from school for a holiday or day off, try carving out a little intentional family time; even if it is only 30 minutes.

You do not need an elaborate outing or a perfectly planned activity.

🎲 Play a game
🚶 Take a walk
🎨 Create something together
🥪 Make lunch together
💬 Sit and talk
😂 Be silly and laugh together
📵 Put the phones away for a little while

Even a short amount of undistracted, quality time can help kids feel seen, valued and connected.

Those small moments can strengthen communication, build trust and support your relationship over time.

It is not always about how much time you have together; it is about being present in the time you do have.

Not every session ends with a finished project and that is kind of the point.

Leaving a project unfinished can actually be part of the learning.

It gives kids opportunities to practice:

✨ Time management: learning what can realistically be accomplished in the time we have
✨ Patience: knowing they can come back to something instead of rushing
✨ Flexibility: being okay when things don’t go exactly as planned
✨ Self-regulation: managing the feelings that can come with having to stop
✨ Perseverance: returning to something and continuing even after a break
✨ Letting go of perfection: understanding that progress matters more than finishing quickly

At Kreate What U Want, the art is the tool but the skills being practiced can carry into everyday life.

Sometimes the project is still in progress because they are still in progress, too.

Even the rapids eventually find their flow. 🌊

Life can feel a little like that too: busy, uncertain, messy and sometimes moving faster than we would like.

We do not always have to have everything figured out.

Sometimes we just need to keep moving, adjust along the way and trust ourselves as we find our own flow.

A little reminder from nature today: you are allowed to move at your own pace.

Different art supplies can bring out different ways of expressing what words can not.

Not every child or teen can easily explain what they are thinking or feeling and sometimes, they do not even know where to begin.

That is where creativity can help.

▪︎ Paint might offer freedom.
▪︎ Clay can give busy hands something to focus on.
▪︎ Markers can bring thoughts to life.
▪︎ Collage can help communicate through images.
▪︎ Yarn, beads and other materials can encourage focus, patience and exploration.

At Kreate What U Want, I offer a variety of materials because there is not just one way to express, regulate, create or connect.

Sometimes the goal is not to make the “perfect” piece of art.

It is giving kids and teens another way to say:

♥︎ “This is what I am feeling.”
♥︎ “This is what I am thinking.”
♥︎ “This is me.”

1:1 sessions and group workshops available.

More than art; it is creating tools for everyday life.
