We encourage residents, commuters, and local stakeholders to attend the upcoming I-29 Corridor Study open house on May 19 to learn more about the study recommendations and help shape the future of transportation and growth in North Sioux City and the surrounding region.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), in collaboration with the Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council (SIMPCO), the City of North Sioux City, the community of Dakota Dunes, and Union County, will hold a public meeting open house from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the North Sioux City Community Center located at 205 Sodrac Dr. in North Sioux City. The public meeting is designed to present key findings and draft final recommendations for the Interstate 29 Corridor Study.

The public meeting open house will be informal, allowing for one-on-one discussion with the study team. A prerecorded presentation will play on a continuous loop for the duration of the open house. Informational display boards will also be provided.

For those who cannot attend the open house or desire additional information on the overall study, the prerecorded presentation and open house displays will also be available on the study website at https://i29corridorsd.com/. The website provides additional information on the study scope and schedule.

The website also allows for online comments to be submitted. Written comments will be accepted through Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The study team encourages input from area residents, commuters, and stakeholders to help refine and finalize recommendations.

Local Business Spotlight: Continuing a Local Legacy 🌊

In February 2026, John and Katie Hurtado became the new owners of Rubber Dockie, a North Sioux City-based business founded by Jamie Wankum that offers water mats and inflatables.

For Katie, the story feels full circle. She grew up spending time at McCook Lake before moving away for college and later to California. Now, she and her husband, John, have returned to the area to build their future and grow a business rooted in connection and community. With Jamie continuing on as a mentor and advisor, the Hurtados are focused on carrying forward the foundation he built while also honoring Katie’s family legacy as a local small business owner.

Their “why” is simple. Some of life’s best memories are made on the water, and they want to help create more of those moments for others.

They are excited to grow the business locally and look forward to getting involved and giving back to the community.
