White Springs, here we come ☀️🎶🇵🇪

Join us at the Florida Folk Festival, a 3-day celebration of music, dance, storytelling, and culture from around the world. We are honored to share the beauty of Tondero from Piura, Peru with talks and performances throughout the festival.

This year, our Master of Tondero Ena Casasola and apprentice Lucia Morales will be presenting the rich traditions, rhythm, and spirit of Peru’s northern coast. Our group has worked with so much dedication and cariño preparing this presentation, and we are excited to share the result with all of you ❤️

From our very first class to this stage, it has been a beautiful journey of learning, growth, and preserving culture through dance. We hope you can join us and celebrate with us at this amazing festival ✨

Folklife Apprenticeship Program
The Florida Folklife Apprenticeship Program supports the preservation of folklife and traditional arts through one-on-one apprenticeships, recognizing the value of folklife and traditional arts in Florida while enabling participants to work together to maintain and share traditional knowledge, skills, and techniques. At the end of the apprenticeship term, the master artists and apprenticeships take to the folklife stage to demonstrate the finished product from their months of classes.

Apprenticeship Master Ena Casasola, from Homestead, Florida by way of Lima, is a master dancer and choreographer of dances from Peru’s coastal region. Upon moving to South Florida, Ena joined Sumaj Tusuy, a dance company founded by past Apprenticeship Program Master Artist Betty Caloreytti. Sumaj Tusuy specializes in Andean dance of La Sierra, as well as cultural outreach which preserves and promotes indigenous Peruvian cultural heritage across South Florida.

Lucia Morales, one of the principal dancers of the group, has been dancing with Ena for many years and considers her a mentor and family member. Through the Apprenticeship Program, Ena is training Lucia in her specialty of dance and folk culture of La Costa. At the Folklife Stage, you will see a Costal dance choreographed by Ena and Lucia, performed by Sumaj Tusuy.
