I made this video more than three years ago, when Antonio was not yet two, but for some reason I never shared it.

My father began learning jiu-jitsu as a young boy. It had such a profound impact on his life that he made sure it became an essential part of our education as well, under the guidance of our teachers. For us, it was never a hobby or simply a sport. It taught us self-defense, discipline, confidence, respect and responsibility.

Antonio is five now. Beyond the training itself, jiu-jitsu has given him the opportunity to grow up around the school, our students and, of course, my brothers. Laura has supported this from the beginning, and together we are doing our best to continue that tradition with him.

This beautiful boutique school is a strong expression of our architectural standards. Exposed concrete, natural light, warm woodwork, royal-blue tatami, complete wall and column protection, secure lockers and private showers come together to create a safe, clean and thoughtful environment for the teaching and practice of Jiu-Jitsu.

When we built Valente Brothers Headquarters, we gave a great deal of thought to the environment. The concrete, wood, glass, natural light and surrounding vegetation were chosen to create a place that felt strong, calm and welcoming. But the building itself was never the purpose. What mattered was what would happen inside it every day.

From our father and our teachers, we learned that jiu-jitsu cannot be taught through an assembly-line approach. Teaching requires presence. It means knowing the students, understanding where they are in their development and helping each one progress. This applies to a child entering the mat for the first time, a white belt beginning the journey and an experienced student who has practiced for many years.

We built this headquarters so that we could remain on the mat, teach every day and maintain that direct connection with our students. As Valente Brothers has grown, this principle has remained unchanged. Every teacher entrusted with our method carries the same responsibility: to teach with attention, patience and personal example.

The materials and architecture form the building. The daily relationship between teacher and student is what makes it a school.

After Grandmaster Helio, Royler was the teacher who most influenced our Jiu-Jitsu development.

Our memories with him span many years and places: private lessons at his home in the hills of Copacabana; more lessons at his house in Los Angeles when he lived there in the early 1990s; training with him at Vasco da Gama, inside the Estádio de Remo da Lagoa; and, of course, countless hours at Colégio Padre Antônio Vieira, the historic home of the Academia Gracie that became known as Gracie Humaitá.

Grandmaster Helio deeply admired Royler’s ability to teach students of every age and level, especially his rare gift for private lessons and for working with children. Royler’s warmth, playful sense of humor and positive energy made learning enjoyable and natural. Yet when it was time to prepare for fights, that same lightness was matched by remarkable focus and intensity.

We had the privilege of helping Royler with his preparations, accompanying him on trips and, later in our lives, training side by side with him as he prepared for some of his fights. Those experiences gave us lessons and memories that went far beyond Jiu-Jitsu and remain an important part of who we are today.

Royler, thank you for every lesson, every laugh and every example. It is always a privilege to be with our teacher. We look forward to seeing you here in Miami this September.

Before there was a school, there was a small dorm room, a narrow space between two fixed beds, and one student willing to train.

The path from that room to what Valente Brothers is today was never simple. There were closed doors, unexpected changes, lost support and moments when everything could have ended. But our father had taught us never to accept the first “no” as final.

With the guidance of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie, the support of our family and the help of loyal friends and students, we continued to adapt, learn and find a way forward.

This is part of that story.

In Jiu-Jitsu, as in life, there is a constant debate about evolution, innovation, and what is considered “modern.”

Evolution is important. But the essential objective of one-on-one combat has existed for thousands of years: control the opponent, neutralize the threat, and, when necessary, force submission.

The statistics reveal something remarkable. Across UFC history, five fundamental submissions account for 81.7% of all submission finishes. Just two account for more than half.

This reflects one of Grandmaster Helio’s central teachings: effectiveness is not found in accumulating endless techniques, but in mastering the fundamentals until they can be applied instinctively, under pressure, and against real resistance.

Our Fighting Foundations curriculum is directly inspired by his methodology. It was further shaped by our father, Dr. Pedro Valente, whose scientific mind brought an academic, evidence-based approach to the study, organization, and teaching of Jiu-Jitsu.

The fundamentals are not merely where Jiu-Jitsu begins. They are what continue to work when it matters most.

Hélio Gracie did not invent every technique, nor did Jiu-Jitsu begin with him.

Carlos Gracie established the family’s foundation, brought his brothers into its mission, and entrusted Hélio with the responsibility of carrying the technical work forward. Hélio embraced that responsibility and dedicated nearly eight decades to studying, teaching, testing, and refining the art.

Through countless classes, real fights, and careful observation, he developed a different theory of combat based on survival, distance, timing, leverage, energy conservation, and control. He also organized a structured self-defense curriculum in which review, new techniques, and repetition worked together to build reflexes for real situations.

But his contribution went beyond technique. Hélio adapted his teaching to different bodies, ages, and limitations, expanding who Jiu-Jitsu could serve. For him, physical ability had to be guided by awareness, courage, self-control, and moral responsibility.

He did not create something from nothing.

He gave Jiu-Jitsu a new direction and made it the work of his entire life.
