Sometimes self-respect looks a lot like being pi**ed off.

People love to make change sound pretty. Find your motivation. Love yourself. Believe in yourself. Trust the process.

But a lot of real change starts somewhere much uglier.

Sometimes people get tired of making the same promise and breaking it. Tired of avoiding mirrors. Tired of being winded doing things that used to be easy. Tired of spending money, joining another gym, starting another diet, and somehow ending up in exactly the same place.

Eventually something inside says, enough.

And I don’t think there is anything unhealthy about that.

There is a difference between being unhappy with where you are and believing there is something wrong with who you are.

You can want more for yourself without hating the person you are right now. You can look honestly at parts of your life and say, “This isn’t good enough for me anymore,” without believing you aren’t good enough.

That distinction matters.

Anger can get someone through the door. Frustration can make someone finally ask for help. Sometimes being completely fed up is what finally makes a person willing to do something differently.

But eventually something has to replace it.

You cannot spend the rest of your life running away from where you started. At some point, you have to start building toward where you want to go.

And maybe that is where real change happens.

Not when you finally hate yourself enough to move.

When you respect yourself enough to stop negotiating with the life you keep saying you don’t want.

A lot of women spend years becoming everything everyone else needs them to be. A wife. A mother. An employee. The dependable one. The one who shows up, keeps things moving, carries the weight, solves the problem and somehow still finds a way to be there for everybody else.

And there is something beautiful about that. But there is also a danger in becoming so good at being needed that eventually you start measuring who you are by what you provide for everyone else.

Your time belongs to someone. Your energy belongs to someone. Your attention belongs to someone. And without even realizing it, you can become incredibly important in everybody else’s life while slowly becoming an afterthought in your own.

This is what this place does.

For an hour, all the titles you carry outside these walls get quiet. The job. The house. The kids. The responsibilities. The people who need you. None of it stops mattering. It just stops being the measure of you for a minute.

And the question becomes: What are you capable of?

Not as somebody’s wife. Not as somebody’s mother. Not as somebody’s employee.

You.

For once, your value isn’t measured by what somebody needs from you. You are discovering what exists inside of you when the only person you are responsible for in that moment is yourself.

You can love being a wife. Love being a mother. Love being the person everyone can depend on. None of those things have to become smaller for you to become bigger.

You don’t have to abandon the people you love to stop abandoning yourself.

There is still a woman underneath everything she does for everyone else, and she deserves to know what she’s capable of too.

Seven women walked onto that stage individually, but they represented something collective.

Seven completely different women. Different ages, different personalities, different struggles, different strengths, different insecurities, and different reasons for doing this. But somewhere along the way, an entire gym became invested in watching them succeed.

And I think there is something incredibly powerful about women becoming genuinely invested in seeing other women become powerful.

There could have been comparison. There could have been competition between them. Instead, they helped each other become better. They celebrated each other’s progress, supported each other through the hard days, and stood beside each other until eventually there was nowhere left to stand beside them.

Because when their number was called, each woman had to walk out there alone.

Nobody could pose for her. Nobody could hide her nerves. Nobody could stand beside her under those lights. She had to step forward, take up that space, and say without saying a word: Here I am. I worked for this. I earned this. And I am proud of it.

There is strength in that.

There is also something beautiful about watching women allow themselves to be proud without apologizing for it. Seven different bodies. Seven different stories. Seven different versions of strength. None of them needed to look like the woman beside her for her own accomplishment to mean something.

But what makes me just as proud is what happened behind them.

They may have been the seven who competed, but an entire gym went on this ride with us. People followed their prep, encouraged them, watched them practice, celebrated their changes, showed up for them, and became emotionally invested in something they weren’t even competing in themselves.

You can’t manufacture that kind of culture.

So yes, seven women took the stage.

But an entire gym felt proud.

They walked out there individually, but they never walked out there alone. ❤️

Testimonial

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life to stay active and healthy. Videos, jogs, HITT, classes and a mix of it all. I’ve been every size you can dream of. I’ve been obese with my max weigh in at 265 lbs and a size 22 pants. I’ve been chubby, thick, normal, skinny fat, lean. I’ve worked hard to cure my life long unhealthy relationship with food. I’ve restricted, I’ve position controlled, Jenny Craig, keto, macros, meal plan, binge eat till I am physically sick and rewarded through food. I brought all this to Dukes with me. I threw it at Michael and he supported as I navigated through trial and error over the last year and a half. When I’ve wanted to quit- he’s given me space and support to think and fight though my old patters. Everyone verbalizes what they want- results, strength, bikinis, health—but you have to learn what you’re willing to do to get there. The concept of an easy way or quick results are not available in life- and definitely not at dukes. We are not accountable to Michael- we are ultimately learning to be accountable to ourselves- learning to find that extra fight beyond what was “ good enough” before. He’s just there to be that voice to remind you when you can and should do better. You either want that voice or you don’t and thus why Dukes can’t be for everyone. I needed support, I needed to learn my fight is bigger than my fold. I needed to be seen for more than just my past- by myself beyond anyone else.
Dukes gave something that I didn’t find a way to before- the ability to be proud of who and where I am. I am and I am thankful to the Dukes support along the way.

All these gyms say, “Come join us and have fun!” Well, we don’t have time for fun. We have time for results. But I’ll tell you what: once you get results, you’ll have more fun in life, not just for the hour.

Because chasing an hour of fun isn’t what changes you.

Showing up when you don’t feel like it does. Pushing yourself when it would be easier to back off does. Having standards when nobody is watching does. Keeping the promises you made to yourself does.

And when you do that long enough, something much bigger than your body starts to change.

You stop looking at training as the thing you have to do to get the body. Somewhere along the way, you actually start loving this s**t. Being strong. Pushing yourself. Having standards. Seeing what you’re capable of. Being surrounded by people doing the same thing.

And something funny happens.

The people who stopped chasing fun start having a whole lot more of it.

Not because the work got easier. Because they became someone who could find something in the work itself. The challenge. The accomplishment. The feeling of knowing you did something you once would have avoided.

We never tried to make the work easier to love. We taught people how to become someone who could love doing the work.

We have plenty of time for fun. We just don’t put it before the work.

The Gym Doesn’t Build Your Body.

It Builds Your Mind.

The Body Is Just The Proof.

Proof of what?

Proof that you finally stopped believing every excuse your mind gave you and started becoming honest with yourself.

Your actions had to match what you said you wanted. Discomfort became something to embrace instead of avoid because pain and discomfort are things you grow through, not run away from. Every meal became a decision because nobody was forcing you to make it. Every morning your mind gave you a reason to stay home, and every time you showed up anyway, you reinforced a different identity.

That’s when you realized discipline isn’t taught, it’s practiced. Confidence isn’t found, it’s earned by repeatedly doing what you said you were going to do. The barbell doesn’t build character. It exposes it.

At some point, “I can’t” stopped being something you were allowed to hide behind. The gap between what you said you wanted and what your actions actually said became impossible to ignore, and you started realizing you were capable of far more than you believed.

Negotiation stopped because the workout didn’t care how you felt that day. Failure stopped being your identity. Missing a lift, a meal, or a week became information instead of permission to quit.

Little by little, decisions stopped being driven by emotion and started being driven by the person you were becoming. That’s why you don’t become lean and then disciplined. You become disciplined first, and eventually your body reflects it.

Proof that your body changed because you did first.

That’s what we do here.

Everyone talks about love as if it’s the only healthy reason to change.

Love yourself.
Love the process.
Love the journey.

But that’s not how many people actually change. Sometimes people change because they’re angry.

Angry they broke another promise.
Angry they’re out of breath tying their shoes.
Angry they’re being treated a certain way.
Angry they wasted years.
Angry they look in the mirror and no longer recognize themselves.

That anger isn’t necessarily hatred. It’s a refusal to accept reality any longer. But anger can move you forward. The anger wasn’t the destination. It was the catalyst.

People think healthy emotions are the only acceptable fuel for change, when in reality many transformations begin with emotions people consider ugly.

The anger starts the journey.

Something deeper is what keeps you going.

If you ever want to be faster, you got to run with a bunch of people who are way faster than you.

And there’s something that happens with us as humans. When you are surrounded by those who are superior in their performance than you are, their standard eventually becomes your standard. You’re bound to be lifted up if you’re as ambitious.

If not, you’re wasting everyone’s time.
