Chicas por favor tome se el tiempo de level!! Rosario GodinaPatricia Davila
The ability of a blood vessel to relax is not passive. It is actively regulated by molecular signals—and nitric oxide is one of the most important.
In healthy blood vessels, endothelial cells produce nitric oxide, which diffuses into the surrounding smooth muscle and triggers a signaling pathway that causes the vessel to relax. This process, known as vasodilation, helps regulate vascular tone, blood flow and blood pressure.
When nitric oxide production or signaling is impaired, blood vessels lose some of that ability to relax normally. This is one reason endothelial dysfunction has become such an important area of cardiovascular research.
What still fascinates me is that a molecule so small can have such a profound influence on the circulatory system.
Understanding this mechanism was central to the work that led to our Nobel Prize—and the science of nitric oxide has continued to expand considerably since then.
I explore that evolving science, and what it means for cardiovascular health, in the fully updated edition of NO More Heart Disease.
