This is a friendly reminder that the dojo is closed this week for February vacation. As many of you know, we alternate each year between February and April, and this year February is our scheduled break.

I hope this week gives your family time to slow down, spend meaningful time together, and truly be present with one another. These moments, even the busy or chaotic ones, often become the stories we smile about in the years ahead.

Wishing you all a happy, safe, and restful vacation week. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the mat soon.

There are moments that cut through all theory, all armchair analysis, all slow-motion breakdowns.

Ahmed Al Ahmed is one of those moments.

Watching what he did, I don’t feel the urge to critique. I feel the urge to learn.

I want to train with him.
I want to learn from him.
I want him to be my sensei.

Because when it really counted, he embodied the two things that matter most in any real-world confrontation:

He faced fear.
And he acted.

Every self-defense or tactics expert can point out things he could’ve done differently. Control the weapon. Angles. Timing. Tools. Options. That conversation is easy. It’s safe. It happens after the danger has passed.

But in that moment, Ahmed got the essentials right:

1. He faced fear.
2. He acted.

Tony Blauer calls it using fear as fuel… not denying it, not freezing under it, not waiting for perfect conditions… but letting fear sharpen purpose and drive action.

Ahmed didn’t retreat into analysis.
He didn’t wait for certainty.
He didn’t outsource responsibility.

He moved toward the danger for the sake of others.

That’s not recklessness.
That’s courage under load.

Technique matters. Training matters. Preparation matters. But without the willingness to confront fear and take action, technique is just theory sitting on a shelf.

What I feel watching Ahmed isn’t judgment…. it’s awe.

Awe at bravery.
Awe at selflessness.
Awe at someone who stepped forward when it would’ve been easier to step back.

That’s the lesson.

Not perfection.
Not hindsight.
But courage in motion.

Respect, gratitude, and deep admiration to Ahmed Al Ahmed.

🥋 Atlantic Karate’s Fight for a Cure! 💖 - Together we kick harder when it counts. 👊

We’re incredibly proud to share that Atlantic Karate raised $𝟒𝟕𝟕𝟒 for the 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 — earning 2nd place among all company teams!

We finished right behind Stratham Audi and Porsche (apparently horsepower helps fundraising too 😆)…
…but we did manage to outrank DraftKings and Walmart.
(Take that, corporate giants! 🥋💥)

Our fundraising came from selling pink belts, donations made in honor of our team, and the incredible efforts of our students and families who called, emailed, and rallied their loved ones for this cause.

We are beyond grateful — and honestly, blown away — by how our dojo family shows up. Your compassion, energy, and community spirit are what make Atlantic Karate truly special. ❤️

We had a powerful night for World Karate Day training alongside our friends from Authentic Karate Training Center and North Shore Karate Academy.

I couldn’t be more proud of our adult students — John, Scott, Stephanie, and Aidan — for the way they showed up and pushed through the 100-kata challenge with grit and composure. Each of them rose to meet their own obstacles and stayed locked in all the way through.

Moments like this remind us that the real reward in karate isn’t the technique alone — it’s the people beside you. The friendships, the shared sweat, and the respect earned through effort are what make the journey meaningful.

Proud of this crew. Proud of our dojo family.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀 𝐃𝐚𝐲!! 💟

Our dojo had an incredible time participating in the 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 walk this weekend. I continue to be blown away by the kindness, generosity, and heart of this community.

We don’t just train together — we show up for others together.
And yes… after all those squats, stances, and kicks, it turns out we walk pretty well too. 😉

Between the steps we took and the support our students and families rallied behind, we were able to make a real contribution to a cause that touches so many lives.

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”
— Coretta Scott King

Thank you to everyone who walked, donated, cheered us on, or helped spread the word.

This is what martial arts looks like off the mat — strength in service to others.

We all lose focus. One moment you’re present, the next you’re pulled away by a ping, thought, or to-do list. Focus isn’t a mystery—it’s a muscle. Here’s how to train it.

𝟏. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐲𝐞𝐬
Where your eyes go, your attention follows. Our gaze directs the mind—when your eyes lock in, your focus follows.

“Eyes always attract attention, but gaze orienting is task-dependent.” (PubMed)

Fix your eyes on what matters, and your brain will do the same.

𝟐. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲
Your posture speaks before you do.

Stand tall or sit with intent—your body position signals your brain to engage.
In one study, “standing posture improved cognitive control across tasks.” (Nature Scientific Reports)

When your body anchors, your attention does too.

𝟑. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝
Ask yourself, what’s the one thing I’m doing right now?
Then do only that. Even brief mindfulness or attention drills sharpen control and awareness.

“Mindfulness training enhances cognitive control and reduces lapses of attention.” (Frontiers in Human Neuroscience)

The goal isn’t perfect focus—it’s training yourself to return faster each time you drift.

𝐓𝐨 𝐁𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐦
Karate isn’t about how you look, but who you become. Strength comes from being real, not just seeming the part. This week’s lesson reminds us to focus on substance over appearance — in the dojo and in life.

𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦
“To be rather than to seem.” – On Friendship

This wisdom has lasted for centuries because it points to something we all struggle with: showing one image to the world while living another within.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 → 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞 → 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦: Today’s world pushes us to polish the “highlight reel” — smiling photos, filtered lives, staged perfection. It’s tempting to pretend, to seem instead of to be.

𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞: The real power comes from choosing authenticity. Strength is built quietly — in discipline, in action, in integrity. To be is to grow. To seem is to settle.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: The deeper values here are honesty, humility, and resilience. The courage to live aligned with what matters most — not for appearances, but for truth.

𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞
Karate is built on action, not appearances. It’s not about belts, trophies, or titles — it’s about showing up, training hard, and living the values of honor and integrity.
At Atlantic Karate, we strive “to be” and not “to seem” by focusing on substance over show. We are always students, never masters. Be a student; don’t seem a master.

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬
𝐀𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬
In work and family, strength shows in following through and keeping promises. As parents, we must show our kids how to live through actions, not just words. To be the person we teach them to be.

𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐬
In school or sports, respect isn’t earned by looking the coolest, fastest, or funniest. It comes from effort — studying when it’s tough, practicing after class, and cheering for teammates.

𝐃𝐮𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬 🧭
Do my actions match what I say matters?
Am I disciplined when no one is watching?
Am I the person I want my kids and friends to see?
Is what I’m showing the world truly who I am becoming?

𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 – 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
At Atlantic Karate, we strive “to be” and not “to seem.” That means choosing substance over appearance, and making value-driven decisions with honor and integrity.
This week, let this lesson guide you not just on the mats, but in the way you live, lead, and grow. And if you’re looking for a place built on these values, our doors are always open.

𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐟 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭 🥋
The phrase “To be rather than to seem” comes from an essay called On Friendship. Fun twist: it’s also the official state motto of North Carolina.

🥋 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭
Life won’t always give us the easy path. When the “wind” isn’t there, we can still move forward by rowing—choosing effort, resilience, and responsibility. This lesson matters as much for adults as it does for kids.

𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦
There’s an old Latin proverb that says:
When the wind fails, take to the oars.

Picture a boat drifting on calm water—no wind, no sail to carry you forward. What do you do? Sit and wait? Or pick up the oars and row?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦
It’s tempting to wait. Adults wait for the schedule to calm down, for energy to return, or for recognition at work. Kids wait for schoolwork to feel easier or for challenges to disappear. But while we wait, we drift.

𝐑𝐨𝐰, 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐭
The proverb reminds us: we don’t need to wait. We can row. Rowing means effort. It means self-reliance. It means creating progress even when conditions aren’t ideal. Waiting is drifting. Rowing is choosing.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐚𝐫𝐬
Rowing builds character because it calls on deeper values:

-Self-Reliance: Taking responsibility for your own progress.
-Resilience: Moving forward even when it’s tough.
-Flexibility: Finding another way when Plan A isn’t working.
-Gratitude: Seeing challenges as opportunities to grow stronger.

𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞
Karate training is full of both “wind” and “oar” days. On wind days, energy is high and progress feels natural. On oar days, the body feels heavy, focus is scattered, and nothing clicks. Those days are tough—but they’re where real growth happens. Showing up and rowing anyway builds resilience, discipline, and confidence that last beyond the dojo.

𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
This week, ask yourself and your family:
-Where do I feel the wind is missing right now?
-What oar can I pick up today to keep moving forward?

The wind won’t always be there. But progress belongs to those willing to row.

𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
At our dojo, this is what training is about—not just learning techniques, but building the strength to keep going when life gets hard. Whether you’re a parent, an adult student, or a child on the mat, you’ll find your oars here.

A student once came to me determined to kick exactly like I did.
He was the strongest man I’d ever met — but also six inches taller, 100 pounds heavier, and built completely differently than me. Different mobility. Different health. Different life story.

For months he struggled, trying to copy my style. And for months, he failed.

The turning point came when he stopped trying to move like me… and started moving like himself.

That’s when everything clicked. His kicks didn’t just improve — they became better than mine. His own body, his own style, his own brand of power.

A teacher who sees themselves as the hero might’ve soaked in the flattery. “He wants to be like me.” But a teacher who understands their role as the guide leads the student to become the best version of themselves.

Pioneering defense tactics legend Tony Blauer said it best: “Show them what they can do, not what you can do.”

That’s your job as a great teacher, coach, or parent.
Do not make carbon copies.
Unleash the originals!!

🥋 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐓𝐨’𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐨𝐭 𝐓𝐨’𝐬⁣

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞:⁣
• Those who believe they “got to” do things⁣
• Those who recognize they “get to” do things

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 “𝐆𝐨𝐭 𝐓𝐨”⁣
When you say, “I got to go to work” or “I got to exercise,” life feels like obligation.⁣

Tasks grow heavier, motivation fades, and resentment builds.⁣

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐨𝐟 “𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐓𝐨”⁣
Now flip the phrase:⁣
• “I get to go to work.”⁣
• “I get to exercise.”⁣
• “I get to help my kids.”⁣

Suddenly the same responsibilities become privileges.⁣
That small change turns duty into gratitude—and gratitude makes us stronger.⁣

𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞 + 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲⁣
But “Get To’s” don’t stop with gratitude. They also see opportunity:⁣
• Exercise is an opportunity to build strength and health.⁣
• Parenting is an opportunity to bond and teach values.⁣

Gratitude says, “I’m thankful I can.”⁣
Opportunity adds, “This can make me better.”⁣

𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦⁣
A Japanese proverb reminds us:⁣
有難しと思えば苦も楽なり⁣
“When you think of something as a blessing, even hardship becomes joy.”⁣

𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞⁣
Training means push-ups, drills, sparring, repetition, and more repetition. ⁣
-To the “got to” student, it’s exhausting.⁣
-To the “get to” student, every class is a privilege—an opportunity to grow stronger in body, sharper in mind, and steadier in spirit.⁣

𝐀 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭⁣
This week, try a simple experiment:⁣
Each time you say, “I got to,” stop and reframe it as “I get to.”⁣
Then ask: “What opportunity is here?”⁣
Examples:⁣
• “I got to drive my kids.” → “I get to spend time with my kids.”⁣
• “I got to exercise.” → “I get to build my energy and health.”⁣

𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭⁣
It’s a small change in words, but a big change in perspective.⁣

Get To’s beat Got To’s every day of the week.⁣

Choose gratitude, choose opportunity—and even hardship becomes joy.⁣
