Share the Road: Safety is a Two-Way Street 🚗

Whether you're behind the wheel or on two wheels, we all have a responsibility to help keep our roads safe.

For drivers:
• Give bicyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing.
• Slow down and wait until it's safe to pass.
• If possible, change lanes when passing a cyclist, just as you would any other slower-moving vehicle.

For bicyclists:
• Obey all traffic laws, signs, and signals.
• Ride in the same direction as traffic and stay as far to the right as is safe.
• Be visible, predictable, and use hand signals when turning or changing lanes.

A little patience and courtesy can prevent a crash and save a life. Let's work together to make Laconia's roads safer for everyone.

🛣️ Speak up for safer Route 114!

The NH Department of Transportation has identified Route 114 from Bedford to New London as a high-priority corridor for transportation improvements, based on data like crash locations, traffic volumes, and road conditions.

Now they need to hear from the people who use it every day.

If you live, work, bike, walk, or drive along Route 114—whether you’re a local resident, commuter, business owner, trucker, or visitor—please take a few minutes to fill out NHDOT’s survey:

🚨: Two US lawmakers have introduced the America Bikes Act, legislation that pulls federal infrastructure funding, safety education and domestic manufacturing incentives into one House bill.

Cycling Weekly reports that H.R. 9041 was introduced by Democratic California Representative Mike Thompson and Republican Florida Representative Vern Buchanan, both co-chairs of the Congressional Bike Caucus. The bill would expand federal transportation funding for local, regional and Tribal governments to improve roadway safety for cyclists and pedestrians, fund safety action plans aimed at reducing road fatalities, and standardise bike safety education in elementary and secondary schools.

According to the National Bicycle Dealers Association, the package includes a $500 million annual investment in active transportation infrastructure alongside the Bicycle Transit Integration Grant Program. On the production side, the legislation absorbs proposals from the U.S. Bicycle Production and Assembly Act, which would temporarily suspend tariffs on imported components used to assemble bicycles inside the United States.

The political framing from Buchanan's office leans on practical mobility outcomes, citing reduced congestion, improved mobility and rider safety. Thompson has emphasised access. Industry groups including PeopleForBikes and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy have endorsed the bill.

What makes this version different from previous federal cycling bills is the bundling. Rather than running infrastructure, education and manufacturing as separate political fights, the America Bikes Act asks Congress to pass them as a single trade. Whether that breadth helps or hurts its passage will be the next thing to watch.

A New Hampshire State Representative and committee chair recently said:
“It is against the law to run over pedestrians. It’s against the law to run bicycles off the road even though it’s sometimes very tempting.”

For the people who walk, bike, and roll on our roads every day — parents with strollers, kids biking to school, older adults crossing the street — this isn’t funny. It’s frightening.

In our new op-ed, Bike-Walk Alliance of New Hampshire explains why this kind of rhetoric is ignorant and dangerous, and what our leaders should be saying and doing instead to keep people safe.
