A student once came to me determined to kick exactly like I did.

He was the strongest man Iโ€™d ever met โ€” but also six inches taller, 100 pounds heavier, and built completely differently than me. Different mobility. Different health. Different life story.

For months he struggled, trying to copy my style. And for months, he failed.

The turning point came when he stopped trying to move like meโ€ฆ and started moving like himself.

Thatโ€™s when everything clicked. His kicks didnโ€™t just improve โ€” they became better than mine. His own body, his own style, his own brand of power.

A teacher who sees themselves as the hero mightโ€™ve soaked in the flattery. โ€œHe wants to be like me.โ€ But a teacher who understands their role as the guide leads the student to become the best version of themselves.

Pioneering defense tactics legend Tony Blauer said it best: โ€œShow them what they can do, not what you can do.โ€

Thatโ€™s your job as a great teacher, coach, or parent.
Do not make carbon copies.
Unleash the originals!!

Every mentor, coach, and parent faces the same choice: will you make yourself the hero, or will you guide someone else to become one? Your role is not to be the hero, but to guide someone else as they become the hero of their story. The best leaders โ€” in classrooms, on teams, and at home โ€” are remembered not for what they achieved, but for the transformation they enabled in others.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐จ๐ฅ๐ž
Martial arts instructors love to talk about legacy. Titles. Ranks. Stories.
But hereโ€™s the truth: you are not the hero.
Your students are.

Think Yoda, not Luke.
Mickey, not Rocky
Miyagi, not Daniel.

The wise guide makes the story possible. The student makes it meaningful.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ค๐ž
Too many teachers forget this.
They talk about their accomplishments.
They cling to honorific titles.
They tell war stories from 30 years ago.

Thatโ€™s ego.
Thatโ€™s insecurity.
Thatโ€™s missing the point.

When the teacherโ€™s energy goes into protecting their own legend, the student gets less light.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค
Your job is simple. Not easy.
Guide. Encourage. Push when needed. Step back when possible.

Stories are powerful. Use them wisely.
Tell stories to teach a principle, not to preserve your myth.

The measure of a teacher is not what you did in the past.
Itโ€™s what your students do today.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐’๐ก๐ข๐Ÿ๐ญ
Stop making students into copies of you.
They donโ€™t need to be another you.
They need to become the best version of themselves.

If you are the guide, your success is measured in transformation.
Not applause. Not titles. Not how loud you can pound your chest.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ž
If you want to lead, you need to let go.
If you want to matter, you need to make students the heroes.

The best teachers are remembered not for who they were,
but for who their students became.

Being able to controlling your opponent whether in the clinch/close quarters or from a slightly further distance is paramount. Great example of a collar/elbow (or forearm) clinch using tai sabaki techniques to off balance your opponent.

We will be covering the sabaki methods in and out of the clinch at Shugyo 2013!!!
