Warmer weather means many of us are ready to be outside and get back into running β˜€οΈπŸƒπŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

But before you jump into that first 5 or 10k, here are a few things to know to keep you injury-free and on the road all spring and summer long.

Your cardiovascular system adapts pretty quickly. As you start running again you might feel fitter in just a matter of weeks.

But your structural system β€” joints, ligaments, connective tissue β€” needs more time to adapt.

When you ramp up your mileage and intensity too quickly, that gap is where injuries can happen β€” but you might not notice until 2-4 weeks after you've already overdone it.

Here's how you can stay on top of it:

➑️ Build frequency before time β€” running three times a week for 20 minutes spreads the load more evenly than jumping into one run a week for 60 minutes.

➑️ Keep intensity low as volume rises β€” when you're adding miles, dial back how hard you're running them.

➑️ Track how you feel, not just your miles β€” soreness, lingering fatigue, and stiffness are all important data points.

➑️ Balance strength training and rest days - because those still need to be a part of your week too! You just may need to make adjustments in favor of the bigger picture.

➑️ Check in with your "why" β€” this helps you keep the long game in mind
