It’s raining out and I have plans to go see The Odyssey this afternoon. So treadmill it is. It was an uneventful run…my favorite kind. Pace is a little higher than average but treadmill speed is wonky. I try to go by RPE rather than the pace because the speed generally isn’t super accurate.

I tried GU chocolate outrage gels and they worked great and taste amazing.

On to deload week next week! 👏🏻👏🏻 After that, I have 2 weeks at peak training miles before I taper. We are getting closer….

Finally, the stars and planets aligned today for my first double digits run of the training program ✨. This was a solid training week overall.

It was much less humid today. No old injuries acted up. My stomach cooperated. My gel kicked in when it was supposed to. Definitely going to need another one next week for my 11 mile run.

And the good news is that the race predictor finally got to 1:59:59 which is my goal finish time. My actual running time is closer to my previous race pace at the moment but I’ve got 6 weeks left to build. I’m confident I can make it happen.

I got home and my assistant coaches were waiting for me in a pile of dirty towels. Life is good. 😌

Today’s run was just checking a box. I knew it wasn’t going to be great but it just had to get done.

It continues to be brutally humid. It was uncomfortable the whole time. I had planned to adjust my pace going into it because I needed to be able to finish. My goal was simply to finish in under 90 minutes and I managed to do it. For comparison, I did a 9 mile run two weeks ago at around a 9:15 pace and the effort today felt comparable even though it was slower. Just because the weather was different.

Meanwhile my fitness level is improving. I’m inching closer to that 2 sub hour goal. You have to take the race predictions with a grain of salt but it is fairly accurate based on my own projections.

This is what training is for. It’s not just about getting the miles. It’s learning how to adjust to different variables. It’s teaching my brain that I can push through even though there’s nothing to do but question my choices the entire time.

Week 8 is done! I’m officially halfway through training. My second cutback week is now over which means the mileage is about to go up again….right In the middle of August. Timed that perfectly. 🙄

Today was so ridiculously humid. 🥵 I’m glad it was only 6 miles but I’m back up to 9 miles next week and counting. There’s a lot of thunderstorms in the forecast this week so it probably will be staying humid. I’m not really thrilled about that but I’ll take it day by day.

I’m right about where I need to be to hit my goal of a sub hour 2 half marathon by the end of September. This next training block will be interesting. If this humidity does pass by September, I’m going to fly. If not, I’ll be ready for it anyway.

My body has changed so much over this past year. When I was training for my last half marathon, I was also in a calorie deficit. I was losing fat but I felt like I was not able to perform at my best.

For this half marathon, I’m eating in maintenance while training. And while I’m heavier than I was before, I also feel stronger and I’m running faster.

When people are on a weight loss journey, they usually have a goal weight in mind. Having lost over 100 lbs and kept it off for many years, I can tell you that number is not as important than you may think.

Rather than getting hung up on the number, find the body where you feel the strongest and most capable of meeting your goals. I can almost guarantee that body weighs more than you think it does.

Week 7 is done! Next week is deload week and the last week of the 2nd training block. I’m so excited for deload week. Last week was physically rough. I subbed for a few additional classes and did not modify my lifting program, which was not a good decision. I ended up not lifting on Friday so I could have a chance at a good run today and it worked. I’m going to be hitting higher mileage soon so I need to stop trying to lift like a superhero during that time. This is the eternal struggle of being a hybrid athlete.

I’m about 2 months out from my race and I need to shave off another 2 minutes from my total time to achieve my sub 2 hour goal. I’m so close and I’ve got plenty of time to get there. I’ve been working on my pacing strategy where I ease in at the beginning then ramp it up in the middle where I’m warmed up and not tired yet, then I back off again towards the end. That strategy seems to be working well. I would like to not be dying the last 5k of the race. 💀

On to week 8!

8 miles this morning. ☀️ Week 6 of training is officially in the books. ✅ Weather was perfect this morning and no unexpected issues came up. I wish every run could be like this.

I’m starting to dial in my pace and prepare for how I will structure it on race day. I did my first half marathon last year with roughly even splits. I am going to try to do it a bit differently this time but it’s going to take a bit of practice. At my current pace, I’m still just over 2 hours. I still have a couple months to get under 2 hours. I’m confident that I can make that happen.

When you step on to the trail and you can see the air, that’s not a good sign. 🥵

I’m in week 4 of training and it’s a perfectly timed deload week. It’s hot as hell and my hip hurts so I’m grateful that it’s reduced miles this week.

This is one of those days where you just go and do the thing. It won’t be pretty but it doesn’t have to be. If you run regularly, the vast majority of runs are going to just be normal. Then you have small percentage that are amazing and about the same percentage that are 💩. Today was firmly in the 💩 category. Those are the ones I probably learn the most from, so they are valuable even though they suck. They need to get done anyway.
