Several battles and numerous skirmishes took place over the 1,170 mile, four-and-a-half month long nımí·pu· (Nez Perce) flight of 1877. This newspaper article is an account of one of those conflicts, the August 20th “Battle of Camas Creek,” which occurred just 11 days after the Battle of Big Hole. The article was published in a Montana newspaper four days after the encounter.

General Howard had been pursuing the Nez Perce ever since the Battle of the Big Hole, and on August 19th he and his forces camped at Camas Meadows, about 50 miles west of Yellowstone National Park and 18 miles away from the nımí·pu·. The nımí·pu· were aware of Howard's forces presence and formed a plan to steal the soldiers’ horses. In the predawn darkness of the following day a group of warriors infiltrated the camp and cut loose the army’s animals. They were detected and shots were fired. In the confusion the nımí·pu· stampeded the herd and drove the animals away. As the sun arose, the Nez Perce were disappointed to learn that the “horses” were almost all mules. General Howard ordered 150 men to recapture the stolen packtrain. The soldiers caught up to the nımí·pu· five miles later and a battle ensued. When the dust settled the Nez Perce escaped again and although Howard had recovered about one fourth of his pack train, it had come at the cost of around 10 casualties. The nımí·pu· did not lose a single warrior.

Without most of his mule train, Howard could not continue the chase and subsequently had to go back to Virginia City, Montana to reequip and have the wounded treated. This enabled the Nez Perce to proceed east through Yellowstone National Park unmolested.
