Fat Loss vs. Weight Loss: Understanding the GLP-1 Difference

People who are on GLP-1 medications often experience significant weight loss, but the key to long-term health is not simply about losing weight—it's about losing fat while preserving lean muscle mass. When people lose primarily fat, they may see less total weight loss on the scale compared to those who lose both fat and muscle. However, this scenario is far better for their metabolism and overall health.

Preserving muscle mass during weight loss is crucial because muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it helps maintain a higher metabolic rate. When weight loss includes muscle loss, the metabolism slows down, making it harder to keep the weight off in the long run. This often leads to the dreaded "yo-yo" effect, where people regain weight quickly after a diet ends.
GLP-1 medications can promote fat loss over muscle loss when combined with proper exercise and nutrition strategies, leading to more sustainable results.
