Final round of the Midwest Apex Karting Championships at Quaker City Karting: this one deserves a long recap. Almost everything went wrong for me but I did what I could to make the best of it.

I only completed one session during Friday practice. The other three were cut short by losing a wheel, front end damage to the kart after someone spun in front of me, (thank you Pro Kart Concepts for the fix) and engine issues.

Saturday wasn't any better. My engine blew out during warmups, so we switched to another one before qualifying. We didn't get to make any other changes and I qualified 12th out of 26 drivers.

In both heats the carburetor was getting too much fuel and hurting engine performance. I lost two spots in Heat 1, finishing 14th. In Heat 2, I avoided a couple big wrecks at the start of the race and worked my way to 6th, but got hit from behind near the end of the race and lost three positions, finishing 9th. After the heats, we got the carburetor fixed (thank you Lawson Speed Shop).

Overnight rain left the track damp for the Pre-Final on Sunday. I started 9th, made my way to 4th, but got passed on the last lap and finished 5th.

The track dried out for the final but we were too cautious with our gear choice and the kart didn't have the top speed to compete. I fell from 5th to 14th but made a few passes on the last lap to cross the line in 10th (9th after penalties).

Had some good moments and lots of frustration at the ROTAX Max Challenge US Trophy.

Qualified 1st in my group and 6th overall in a 34 kart field in wet conditions, but got disqualified for not having an overflow can for the fuel tank. 🤦

Started 32nd for the first two heats. Gained 6 positions in Heat 1, and 6 more after penalties. In Heat 2 I pulled into the pit lane on the formation lap. My chain popped off because the clutch nut was loose. 🤦

Started 30th in the Superheat, gained 5 positions in the race and another position after penalties.

After the Superheat, I noticed the fuel tank was sucked in. The overflow can that we installed didn't have any vents, keeping the engine from getting enough fuel to run at full power. 🤦

I only scored enough points in the heats to start 29th in the Final. but felt confident I could improve after fixing the last of the mechanical problems that were hurting the performance of the kart all weekend.

I had to avoid wrecking into a kart that got loose at the race start and fell to last place in the first turn, but kept my focus and gained 17 positions from that point to the end of the race, finishing 17th. Unfortunately I got a 6 second pushback bumper penalty 🤦 and officially finished 24th.

I have lots of people to thank for making it possible to compete at a national stage in my first season racing ROTAX.

I competed in the ROTAX Max Junior class for both rounds, sweeping the weekend. I also competed in the Briggs LO206 class on Sunday, finishing 3rd.

Here is how things went for me:

On Saturday I competed in the ROTAX Max Junior class.

Qualifying: I didn't set a time. My transponder fell off on the out lap. 🤦

Pre-Final: Started 10th, finished 3rd

Final: Started 3rd, finished 1st.

On Sunday, I competed in the ROTAX Max Junior class and Briggs LO206 Junior class. We ran the races in reverse. It was the first time I raced on this layout and the first time racing two classes in one day.

LO206 Jr: I qualified first, finished the prefinal in second, and got the win in the final on a last lap pass.

ROTAX Max Jr: Qualified first. My seat broke in the middle of the prefinal, but I managed to finish second. I fell to third at the beginning of the final, moved to second after running Cooper Ettore off track (got a deserved 5 second penalty for it🤦, sorry), made the pass for the lead a couple laps later, but a mistake with two to go cost me two positions and I crossed the line in third.

Happy to share the podium with PF Racing and Travis Van Horn for Round 3 in the ROTAX Jr Class, and Lincoln Decoster and Hayden Lawson for Round 4 in the Briggs L0206 Jr class.

Congrats to Preston Fisher for finishing second and Anna McCrone for getting the win in The ROTAX Jr class in Round 4.

Congrats to my fellow Sloan Product teammate Preston Fisher for finishing second in the Great Lakes Sprint Series standings, and to Caleb Smith for finishing 3rd.

More highs and lows, this time at Round 2 of the Apex Karting Championships at G and J Kartway, racing with the Roderick Racing Development team in the LO206 Briggs Junior class. I had top three pace all weekend, but terrible luck.

Practice/Warm-ups: I was among the fastest on track and looking forward to turning it in to good results.

Qualifying: Faced lots of traffic, but managed to get through it near the end of the session. I was on a pole setting lap on the last lap of the session but caught more traffic in the second to last turn & came out 10th of 29 drivers.

Heat 1: Collected in a 4 kart pileup and didn't finish the session. The frame was bent and rear bumper destroyed. Thankfully we were able to get it fixed before the next session.

Heat 2: Run off track in the first turn of the first lap and fell to 16th, but recovered to 9th.

Prefinal: Worked my way up to 11th after starting 21st. I came out of the race with the fastest lap and track record.

Final: Made progress over the first half of the race and caught the front pack, but contact from another driver sent me off track and didn't recover, finishing where I started in 11th.

Highs and lows for me at Motorsports Country Club of Cincinnati during the last two rounds of RMC Americas my first ROTAX race at the national level.

I spent the first practice day learning the track, with the help of James Overbeck. It paid off, as I showed strong pace during the second practice day.

I had a few good moments both races days, gaining multiple positions early in the Prefinals and Finals, as well as putting in the best qualifying time in my group the second race day. But a combination of bad luck, mechanical problems, and setup & on track mistakes hurt my results.

Day 1:
Qualifying - P20 of 28
Pre-Final - P17
Final - P20

Day 2:
Qualifying - P11
Prefinal - P15
Final: P21

Many lessons learned, both off track and on track. I'll be ready for the next one.

Good racing in the first round of the Midwest Apex Karting Championships at New Castle Motorsports Park. It was my first race in the LO206 Jr class since CKNA Grand Nationals last September and my first time under the Roderick Racing Development tent.

Showed top five pace in practice on Friday, but wet conditions all day Saturday made qualifying and the two heat races a challenge.

I qualified 16th of 33 drivers after avoiding spins and crashes on each of my 3 qualifying laps. In heat 1, several karts got tangled up in front of me on the first lap. I had nowhere to go but off track to avoid hitting them, which dropped me to the back of the pack, but recovered to finish 19th. In the second heat, I moved from 16th to 12th, which put me in 14th position to start the pre final.

In the pre final I gained five positions in the first 3 laps, but after contact from another driver, fell back to 14th with a gap too large for me to recover any positions.

In the final, I fell four positions on the first lap after getting squeezed off track, but locked in after that and improved to 8th by the finish.
