Just one of the many frustrating examples of how we've become disconnected in our dance training and performance demands, and made space for dyfunction in dancers.

The starting line isn't balancing leg extensions, or even PLANKING!

Actions that require whole body integration & resistance bands can already be TOO ADVANCED for dancers who are just starting to understand & activate their core stabilzing muscles.

We must START at the center, the torso, working with movement and stabilizing of the spine & pevlis BEFORE introducing movement with the limbs.

I see all too often dancers are encouraged to train their core with exercises and actions that don't allow them to build this understanding properly.

What does this lead to?

Impingements in the shoulder, snapping in the hips, pain/discomfort through the back, stiffled breathing, tension in the jew/neck.

The point of core training is to stop dyfunction, not teach dancers how to compensate & create it before they even begin working in technique.

Don't Get it Twisted, Dancers.

Flexibility isn't the end all be all to your dancer needs & goals.

Having Supportive Range of Motion to move freely & wise ease is what we wanf for our dancing & this requires STRENGTH, COORDINATION, STABILITY, & CONTROL over our bodies.

Focusing too much on passive flexibility can actually take us AWAY from what we need to improve our technique.

Supportive alignment helps your body to....

reduce stress on muscles that would otherwise have to overwork to hold a position,
allowing tension to release so dancers can access more flexibity.

😲 WHAT?

So If I stack my bones like blocks in supportive alignment, I can have more flexibility in my dancing, less tension or discomfort, and better technique?

YES!

What does this mean? ⏭️....

Dancers tend to STRUGGLE 😩
becuase the muscles they are relaxing to find passive flexibility in splits
are the same ones they are trying to use when controlling movement & balance..

This makes it extremely difficult to find free movement in the body while dancing.
It also set the stage for muscle overwork and injury.

Dancers need to train control & stability in their body to help ensure they aren't working through this idea!

"Dancers who train with better alginment will see an increase in flexibility, WITHOUT having a stretching routine".

You can stretch EVERY DAY & still not have all the freedom you want
in your body while dancing!

UGH, right?!

The types of flexibility required ARE DIFFERENT!

Do you want to learn the difference and feel it in your dancing?

Throw in as many "conditioning" exercises as you want into the experience...

but your dancers will NOT see long-term improvement without
understanding the HOW & WHY of those movements along with
how they influence and impact their dance tecnhinque.

Join us for the first of this two part conversation as we dive into:

- common issues/injuries in the hip
- what DANCERS need to know about the glute muscles
- how the hips influence the knee & ankle joints
- how to warm up based on different demands of training & performance

If I could go back in time, here's what I would do differently as a younger dancer...

- learn to understand my body
- learn how to care for my body
- learn how to advocate for myself
- not be afraid to use my voice
- find ways to mold my identity beyond dance
- seek out supportive, understanding, encouraging mentors who helped guide my ability to do all of this much sooner!

Dance is so much more than technique & performance.

That's what I aspire to share with dancers know.

My experiences and this reflection is what lead to starting BCA.

Dancers who have walked the path into adulthood, what would you do differently?

Young dancers, which of these things do you want more of in your dance journey?
