Gone are the days of bragging about how little we sleep. The new normal is 8 or even 9 hours, and hereβs why.ββββββββββββββββ
Benefits of increasing your nightly slumber:ββββββββββββββββ
1) Helps with concentration and productivity β
: This is a "no brainer" (pun intended), because sleep allows our brain to do a "reboot". When we get sufficient sleep, our cognition, concentration, productivity, and performance are all positively impacted, which improves problem solving skills and memory performance. ββββββββββββββββ
2) CALLING ALL ATHLETES β½οΈ: Increased sleep helps with athletic performance by enhancing fine motor skills, reaction time, power, and endurance. Looking to recover faster and avoid injury? UP YOUR SLEEP. High performing athletes aim for anywhere between 8 to even 10 hours of sleep each night.ββββββββββββββββ
3) Supports emotional and mental health π§ : We've all been there. You only got 5 hours of shut eye, and you are not quite your normal self. In addition to the emotional impacts of insufficient sleep, researchers have also found a strong link between poor sleep and mental health (such as depression). This is a good reminder to be aware and take care of your overall health, body and mind. ββββββββββββββββ
4) Immune system boost πͺ: "I like being sick" said no one ever. Want to avoid the seasonal cold/flu? Studies show that people who slept less than 5 hours a night were almost 5 TIMES more likely to develop a cold, when compared to those who slept 7 or more hours each night. Need we say more?ββββββββββββββββ
As always, listen to your body and mind and do what feels right for you. ββββββββββββββββ
