Dancers perform researched, period correct dances while modeling the latest fashions of the era. Kat Nagar is the director of the Atlanta Historic Dance Company. She is a performer, teacher, and choreographer of historical social dance. As well as a dance historian, she is also a historical costumer and creates some of the costumes you'll see in performance. She was a classically trained dancer fo

r 17 years before discovering historical dance at Ga. State University. She performed with the Georgian Dancers for three years and continued her studies at Stanford's Baroque Music and Dance Workshop, and with Consort de Dance Baroque in London, England. She performed Mid-Victorian dance with the Stately Vintage Dancers and eventually took over the group when the director retired. She has performed dance styles, from the 1920s-1960s with History Now, Triple Step Studios, the Atlanta Jazz Preservation Society, Down South Swing and Big City Burlesque and Vaudeville. Kat Nagar and Chris Wilson formed the Atlanta Baroque Dance company in 1998 to focus on performances of 17th and 18th-century court and country dance. The company name changed to Atlanta Historic Dance 2010 to reflect the wider range of dance eras, 1500’s up through the 1960’s.

I have to admit that the cottage was quite spooky at the end of the night.

This was our second day performing with Theatre With a Mission Florida, at Time Travel Into Florida 1776.
We started the day by assisting Susan Guardiola with the dance lessons in the Jubilee Cottage. Then it was time to get sonething to eat and get ready for the ball. We dressed in our historic cottage, traversed a downpour, and prepared to dance at the ball
Susan began the evening with an etiquette lesson and taught a wide range of fun dances throughout the night. There was a reading of The Declaration of Independence by the theatre company, and more wonderful music provided by the Tallahassee Bach Parlay. The dances we performed were The Minuet, and The Comical Fellow. I loved getting to dance to the harpscord music. What a treat!.

First day performing 18th century dance with Theatre With a Mission Florida. The event is Time Travel Into Florida 1776, and was held at the beautiful Goodwood Museum and Gardens in Tallahassee, FL. We have our own historic cottage for dressing which is located just a stroll away from the performance venue. Look at those majestic Oak trees!
Live accompaniment provided by the Tallahassee Bach Parlay. Woohoo!

Part 1
Making trim for my 18th century petticoat. I start by looking at period sources for design ideas. To make the self-fabric trim, I start by tearing strips of fabric into different widths. This is very therapeutic if you've had a rough day at work. Iron them, pink the fabric edges, and use Fray Check over wax paper. Sew a long running stitch down the middle, gather, and sew.
