As the owner and operator of Keys Huka Dive in Venice, Florida, I bring over three decades of experience in the diving community, complemented by my credentials as a PADI Staff Instructor and a 100-ton Master Captain. Since 2007, I’ve gained invaluable insights into what defines a reputable dive charter.

In southwest Florida, we face a concerning safety issue: numerous dive charters are operated by individuals who lack the qualifications necessary to guarantee diver safety. Many local operations are run by “six-pack” captains—the minimum legal requirement—who may only hold an Advanced Open Water certification. In some cases, just an Open Water certification, or no dive certifications at all. This is far from the expertise expected of a true dive professional. A dive professional is classified as a Dive Master or higher, regardless of the certifying agency, whether it be PADI, NAUI, SDI, SSI, or others. It’s important to note that while a Rescue Diver certification is valuable, it does not equate to professional status.

Most local dive charters use six-passenger boats, and many operators lack the required Dive Master certification, which is often a prerequisite for liability insurance when customers are in the water. Some charters may only carry insurance for passengers who remain onboard, similar to fishing charters.

As you weigh your options for a dive charter, consider asking these vital questions:

1. **What are the captain’s qualifications?** Do they hold a Dive Master certification or a higher qualification, such as a Dive Instructor?
2. **Is a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Captain present on the boat at all times while divers are in the water?** Be cautious of operators who leave the boat unmanned while divers are submerged—this poses a serious safety risk.
3. **Does the dive boat have essential safety equipment?** Ensure it carries oxygen for medical emergencies.
4. **Is the crew trained in First Aid and CPR?**
5. **Is the crew part of the Coast Guard drug consortium?** This is a requirement for professional mariners.
6. **Does the company employ Dive Masters to lead the dives?** While not mandatory, having experienced guides enhances safety.
7. **Are they advertising “unlimited bottom time?”** Be wary—this raises red flags about their safety protocols, as monitoring bottom time is critical to preventing decompression sickness.
Also without a required bottom time when do you know when to be back on the boat?

When choosing a dive charter, you have every right to request and verify the crew’s professional certifications. If they hesitate or refuse to provide this information, think twice before entrusting your safety to them.

Huka Dive for Megalodon Fossils What is it?

No diving experience required
This is a chance to experience scuba diving without going through all of the extensive training. In this dive adventure you will receive a short about 20min training session prior to being led by one of our PADI Dive Masters on a full 30 minutes of under water adventure diving to depths up to 20ft. This is a fun way and the most effective way to hunt for Megalodon fossils for non divers. Perfect trip for anyone 8 to 80 years of age. Huka diving is only a $199.00 total for trip.

Certified Scuba Diver?
If so you can dive for Megalodon fossils off the same boat as Huka divers and snorkelers for just $149
Tanks and weights are included and we have gear available for rent.

Sunset Boat Tour Adventure $79p.p.

This is a 2 hour boat tour that will take you through the water ways and sand bars of the Sarasota and Venice areas. Boats have shade and a marine restroom
You will get a chance to see some amazing mansions while touring the calm intercostal water ways. While being driven by one of our u.s. coast guard licensed captains, you will get a chance to experience the wonders of the ocean. It very common on this trip to see dolphins, manatees, and lots of other marine life.
Not only will you get a boat tour but you can also explore the semi-private beaches that you truly can only easily visit by boat. There are ample options to collect sea shells and even find shark tooth fossils right on the beach.
This is a great way to enjoy your friends and family while making memories that everyone will cherish.

**Mixed Dives:** Not everyone certified? No problem! Huka divers can join certified friends, all under the watchful eyes of our PADI dive masters. Together, you'll explore vibrant reefs while hunting for those elusive fossils.

Discover Scuba
No experience required for this PADI Dive Instructor led scuba adventure dive. This is up to 90 minutes of underwater time air supply permitting scuba dive wearing a full scuba kit. You will receive an orientation and skills session from a dive instructor before exploring the waters of world famous Venice, the Shark Tooth Capital of the World. This is the best way to find a Megalodon fossil, more time, covering more area increases your chances of finding a shark tooth.
This is a 4hour adventure including a boat trip and beach adventure.
