Another local relic in the form of a dealer sticker on a pontoon I’m repairing via my main business Adam's Marine Service. They were located a half mile from the snowmobile mounted up in the tree. They sold old snowmobile parts and I recall buying JD Cyclone parts there on a few occasions. Cleats, wear rods, carb parts, brakes…. The building still exists but is a garage door company now

I should have details on my shop class by August. Some things are currently up in the air but the rough plan is a 1977 Scorpion Range Whip build. This Whip from this year performed better than anticipated. I haven’t checked top speed but so far I’ve had it in the 70’s with zero issues, based off gps speed

Local relic of a bygone era. This has been up in this tree just south of Nisswa MN (5 miles from the Sweat Shop headquarters) for 3+ decades. It drew peoples attention to the snowmobile parts business tucked in the woods behind this, off Highway 371. The place was called the Jonque Haus.

They had closed down quite a number of years ago now. I was able to get my hands on some of their leftover inventory which currently still sits in my extensive stash of parts.

They even had CCW engine parts there!!

I still drive by this often and think back on those good old days where we had tons of parts stores and fun times!

In my fiberglass fabrication shop, I started using a new black gelcoat as I wanted something easier to work with. The red Rupp color I use is easy to work with. The Scorpion Whip blue 1978 color is easy also. For some reason the black was difficult but I’ve switched manufacturers and the results has been phenomenal!! This is a Kitty Cat pan I’m producing for Arctic Restoration Specialties but I’m using this same black from now on when I make the Scorpion Whip bellypans for 1977-80 (Sting also). Eventually I intend to reproduce hoods out of fiberglass for that era of Whip, replacing the ABS (“always breaking & shattering”) plastic hoods and pans Scorpion used in later years. I have one fiberglass Whip pan available currently.

Also for those bringing me Whips to repair, it’s a good opportunity to have a new repop fiberglass bellypan installed, since I typically remove the Cuyunas out for service and it’s way easier to install a pan at that time

Flyer for Pequot Lakes coming up in January. “Your first love” theme. Your first snowmobile. Mine is my 76 JD Cyclone. Bought in 8th grade. Sold it when I graduated high school. Then bought it back again in 2019. Still in the same condition. Nice shape with a few bruises

Updates from the sweat shop:

I’m still in the evaluation phase of the future of the shop class. I’ve said before that this year my total expenses were down from previous years but donations were minimal which means more out of pocket for me. Economics and bad MN winters 3 years in a row are keeping buyers and donors frugal. Understandable. But I’ve been going slow in analyzing expenses, viability, etc.. and hoping to have definitive answers on the future. Right now the goal is to do class this fall. Whether that happens or not I don’t know with certainty but leaning towards the yes here.

After next year, I don’t know. If this fall does happen it will gauge future plans based off how the first month goes.

I am currently playing catch up on my paying job of fixing boats. I’m also catching up on snowmobile repairs still and making some progress there.

The sweat shop trailer and its inventory remains for sale at $3k for the complete package.

Lastly I am also way behind on fiberglass repop parts and currently working to begin production of kitty cat bellypans for a Cat vendor. I have a new gelcoat manufacturer and I’m learning how it’s different from the previous gelcoat I’ve been using (it’s very different handling stuff!)

Scorpion Whip and Sting bellypans are going to be back in production this summer. New price $275 per pan. Materials are insanely expensive!!
New gelcoat for these will give them a darker appearance which will really look nice.

Shop class flashback. Something I put a strong emphasis on was to allow the kids to try out the snowmobiles they built (or in some cases fixed). I wanted them to see the fruits of their labor but also to keep things fresh and interesting during school.

Discussions on the future of my shop class continue. New and varying ideas are being explored and everything really revolves around funding. This year’s class expenses were down from previous years but my personal out of pocket spending was way up.

Still at the moment the next snowmobile on the schedule is a 77?? Scorpion Range Whip. The plan is start on that this fall. From there it’s all up in the air.

Update on shop class. I’ve been meeting with leadership and gathering all the facts and stats on my time there. Discussing how I perceive the past few years and how expensive it is and what my ROI is. Basically wanting a crystal clear understanding of what my money and donor money is doing and producing.

It’s very expensive to do shop class. This year the overall cost was somewhere just shy of $5k. Down from the usual $7k-ish per year. But yet I’ve paid the most out of my personal pocket for this year donations and funding has been very low. Princeton was a dud. Pequot normally is wildly successful for fundraising but it was -30 there this year and understandably many didn’t even come, which means low sales.

I do have my swap trailer and its contents for sale as a package deal. It’s a very fun way to meet people and raise money but there are other easier ways of accomplishing the same thing. I’ve been in the swap circuit for decades and also feel it’s time to pass that torch.

So right now I am gathering all my facts and figures and I plan to come up with a plan for the future. Right now I can say this coming school year is a plan. The Scorpion of choice for the fall is a Range Whip.

More updates to come. Beyond the new school year this fall, I don’t know yet. Lots of variables as mentioned. Main ones are funding and outcome
