As tryout season approaches here in Western New York, I wanted to reshare an article I wrote a few years back about the realities of youth hockey tryouts.

Five years later, the conversations with parents, players, and coaches haven’t changed much. The pressure is higher, the noise is louder, and unfortunately the focus can still drift away from what matters most: development, confidence, and love for the game.

I’ve spent years on the ice working with players of all ages and levels, and one thing remains true: tryouts don’t define a player… but the environment around them can shape their growth and passion for hockey.

My hope in sharing this again isn’t to criticize, but to encourage perspective:
• Let kids play free and compete
• Focus on skill development over labels
• Build confidence, not anxiety
• Remember that hockey is a long journey, not a weekend decision

For parents and players heading into next week: control what you can, play hard, be a great teammate, and trust that the right path will unfold.

Special 3D HOCKEY Skills Clinic Tonight!

If you haven’t met Lucas Braja, you’re missing out on one of the brightest young skill coaches in the game. Lucas is a true technician dialed in on skating mechanics, detailed skill work, and shooting. He brings a calm, steady presence on the ice with clear, high-level demonstrations that players connect with immediately. He’s spent 7 years as a skills coach and 2 years coaching AAA hockey with high end 2011 group in the Greater Toronto Area.

I’ve worked with Lucas for years through Ferroni Hockey Schools, teaching Russian-style skating and detailed skill development. Players naturally gravitate toward his warm, enthusiastic, and approachable coaching style.

Lucas will be in town TONIGNT at Hyde Park, running a 1-hour skills, skating & shooting clinic from 6:00-7:30PM.

What an unbelievable night for our SPA boys! 🙌🏒

Huge shoutout and congratulations to Coach Insalaco, Corey, and Andrew on a big win against Canisius. The guys battled hard and earned every part of that game. Everyone committed to finishing their check & eliminating their man, that was the difference.

We can’t thank you enough for the tickets, the locker room tour, and the ice-level experience. Our kids were blown away! Watching top proslect in the nation bury one right in front of them was the moment of the night.

Nights like this bring our team so much closer. We appreciate you all!

Massive shoutout to Joey Banas! Just signed his OHL contract with the Brantford Bulldogs a team with deep Buffalo ties, led by none other than Jay McKee, former Sabres defenseman and now head coach.

I’ve been coaching Joey since he was a little boy and always knew there was something special about him. He’s had a pro-level shot and unreal skating ability since he was 13 years old. Through hard work, discipline, and determination, he’s continued to prove people wrong year after year.

A great student, an even better person off the ice, and an absolute animal when you see him play. Way to make Buffalo proud, Joey your little brother Colton’s next! 🏒🔥💪

Every team hits the ice tonight a perfect chance to learn the game you play.

I challenge all my players (and anyone who wants to improve) to watch at least one period of hockey tonight.

Too many young players don’t actually watch hockey anymore they’re busy, distracted, or gaming instead of studying the sport.

Watch how pros move in all three zones, how they create space, win battles, execute on special teams, and support teammates.

Don’t just play hockey study it. Learn it. it

Today would’ve been my dad, Larry Mickey’s birthday.

He was an original six NHL player who went from being undrafted to playing 11 seasons in the league and competing in two Stanley Cup Finals an incredible journey built on heart, toughness, and pure determination.

But beyond hockey, he gave even more. He founded the Buffalo Jr. Sabres Hockey Association, helped play a key role in both the NHL Alumni and Sabres Alumni, and spent countless hours helping kids with special needs and giving back to the community he loved.

Sadly, my dad lost his battle with mental health and depression something completely out of character for someone who always fought through every challenge. It’s a powerful reminder that mental health matters, and that even the strongest among us need support.

We all miss him every day, but I’ll always be proud of the legacy he left in the game, in the community, and in the lives he touched.💙🏒
