📚 6-9-1969
🪨In 1969, a dam was constructed at the head of the American Rapids, resulting in the American Falls running dry. For a duration of six months, geologists and engineers examined the rock face and the impact of erosion. They concluded that it would be expensive to remove rock from the base of the American Falls, suggesting that nature should be allowed to proceed naturally.

A sudden rumble signaled impending disaster, and by 5 PM, the station collapsed, destroying two-thirds of the facility. Tragically, one worker, Richard Draper, lost his life, while others escaped unharmed.

📚 6-6-1861
🚢In 1861, during a financial crisis and the Civil War, the Maid of the Mist was sold to a Canadian company. Captain Joel Robinson, aged 53, and two deckhands undertook a challenging journey through rapids and the Whirlpool, successfully navigating the waters despite losing the smokestack. Robinson became the first to guide a boat through these perilous conditions.

Learn about the life of Purple Martins, nature's aerial acrobats, during this family-friendly program! In eastern North America, Purple Martins are urbanites, living almost exclusively near cities and towns in man-made nesting boxes.

Participants will explore the nearby habitat at Beaver Island State Park and get an up-close look inside the nesting gourds. Groups will visit 4 stations to gain a better understanding of this conservation effort.

The purple martin nesting project is part of the Niagara River Area of Concern efforts to address declining wildlife populations. It was funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and is managed by NYSDEC.
