Some of the biggest contributions happen behind the scenes. Our Board President, Gordon, is always one step ahead when it comes to the ballpark and concessions, and his hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

On July 7, the Newton Rotary Club heard from Gordon Milsap (right), President of the Board for the Newton Boys' and Girls' Ball Park. He has served on its board for about 30 years.
The first known public ball park was located in the infield of the racetrack at the fairgrounds, but in 1966, the first diamond was established at the current location, on Scott Avenue in Newton. Originally labeled the Boys' Ball Park, in the 1970's, Girls' were added to the title.
It started small, but added a new concession stand in 2016, and have added lighting, batting cages, a storage shed and have five diamonds.
This year there were about 400 kids involved, with 31 teams ages 4 to 14, and seven travel teams ages 8 to 12.
The facility hosts three tournaments each year, with 30 to 45 teams competing, bringing a lot of people to Newton.
They contract with the schools during spring and fall to provide practice and competition space.
They raise money through various sources like large advertisements on the fence, business who sponsor teams, registration fees, concession sales, and some grant money. They have sold engraved blocks and plaques to donors.
Their board has nine members, and provide about 20 summer jobs for umpires and grounds upkeep.
