...UPCOMING LOSS OF MARINE OBSERVATIONS...

On or after 8 PM EDT on April 5, 2019, it is expected that a
newly identified GPS software issue will cause twenty Coastal and
Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) stations to stop transmitting all
data.

For New England, this includes
Buzzards Bay, MA (BUZM3)
Matinicus Rock, ME (MISM1)
Mt. Desert Rock, ME (MDRM1)

Local National Weather Service Forecast Offices have no control
over fixing or maintaining these sites. They are maintained by the
National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). NDBC is working to update the
GPS software as soon as possible, but this requires onsite visits.
These visits will most likely be done between August and November
of 2019.

You can read the National Weather Service Headquarters Service
Change Notice on this at

The NDBC online schedule of their projected site maintenance is at:

You can read a further explanation of the GPS software issue at:

NOAA apologizes for the inconvenience that this will cause our
customers.

A good reminder from the Quincy Police Department to keep it safe out there on the water everyone!

QPD responded to area of UMass Boston, at the request of the US Coast Guard, on report of unmanned skiff doing circles in water.

Members of USCG, who were on scene when officers arrived, were able to rescue the man from water in the area of the Savin Hill Yacht Club mooring field (~1/4 mile from boat). Victim had spent ~2 hrs in the water. Luckily, the water temperature is around 70 degrees at this time of the year. Towboat US was able to gain control of the boat, which can be very dangerous.

This is a great opportunity to remind boaters to use your safety lanyard kill switch! When a boat is in gear and is circling in the water, like this one was, it is not uncommon for the boat to come around and injure or kill the submerged person.

(It was originally reported as Boston PD who rescued man)

Reduction of traffic is nice, but getting these things resupplying club boats on the Worlds End mooring would be the real win, wouldn't it? Feel free to send them our way, CSAIL - MIT!

Researchers design 3-D-printed, driverless boats that can provide transport and self-assemble into other floating structures.

Seems like MIT is always up to something interesting on the river... (h/t EurekAlert!)

Keep water out of your boat

For me, the words damage control conjure claustrophobic scenes from the 1981 German U-boat film Das Boot.

Stay smart

There's a mind-numbing number of federal and international regulations for the safe operation of vessels at sea. In this week's Lifelines, Mario Vittone boils them down into five areas of concern to help you make smart decisions on the water.
