Dorade Dorade was born to race in the open ocean.

The goal for our current restoration and future sailing is to prepare Dorade to once again perform as a highly competitive ocean racer.

We’re one week out! Join us next Monday, August 24, from 5–7 p.m. on The Sailing Museum’s iconic Dorade Deck for a special reading and panel discussion celebrating Return to Blue Water, a new memoir about Dorade by Pam Rorke Levy.

Olympic medalist and friend of the late author, Pamela Healy, will lead the reading, joined by members of the crew to discuss Dorade’s historic victories under Olin and Rod Stephens, the modern campaign that recreated her greatest bluewater achievements – and the author’s vital role as co-owner and team member.

Admission is free, and attendees are encouraged to check out the Sailing Museum’s many interactive exhibits ahead of the event.

Serena and Dorade spent the last couple of weeks up in Maine preparing for and sailing in the NYYC Annual Cruise. Having Serena close by made it easier for our crew to get all dressed up for the captain’s meeting and opening reception of the Cruise.

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon when Bill Brooks received Dorade’s 1st place awards for the St. David’s Lighthouse class 2. (The big silver one is the Sir Thomas Lipton Memorial Trophy!) After a roller coaster week in which the results were recalculated, sailing master Kevin Miller said, “The Racing Rules of Sailing were followed, and the race results were scored correctly. It was a solid win for the team and one we can be proud of.”

What a week it’s been! Our crew worked hard to stay near the front of the fleet, and Dorade was the second boat in her class to cross the line on Tuesday, after Carina. A procedural scoring issue recognized by the organizers during the race resulted in many handicap changes in the fleet, and Dorade moved from a provisional 2nd place on corrected time in St. David’s Lighthouse class 2 to 1st! Congrats to the team, including Bill Brooks, who served as skipper when Matt, his father, was unable to sail.

Shown approaching the finish line at St. David’s Lighthouse, Dorade completed the Newport Bermuda Race soon after, at 2:38pm, 2nd to Carina on elapsed time in St. David’s Lighthouse Class 2 and half an hour ahead of the next competitor. Waiting for official results but at this point Dorade appears to be a top finisher, behind Carina.

Newport Bermuda Race - First Half

Dorade en route to Bermuda - beating out of East Passage in a solid breeze, dodging wind turbines on the first afternoon out of Newport.

Helmsman Craig Healy writes:

“We have 19+kts of wind and a 90-95 true wind angle (beam reaching). Five sails flying. We’re in one Dorade’s sweet spots and should clear the field of wind turbines well before sunset!”

Subsequent video sent from offshore by Bill Brooks. Photos by Virginia Cargill and Kevin Miller.
