Coweta County Chicks In Chaps- 4-H Mounted Drill Team Coweta County 4H Champion Equestrian Mounted Drill Team We are a highly competitive team dedicated to promoting the principles and tenants of 4-H.

Coweta County Chicks In Chaps is the Coweta County 4-H Equestrian Mounted Drill Team located in Newnan, Georgia with riders from the surrounding areas. The team competes in the Southeastern Mounted Drill Team Association and has won championships for four years in a row with new riders stepping up and working hard to maintain the tradition! We WELCOME cowgirls AND cowboys! The minimum age requirem

ent is nine (9) years of age. The maximum age for riders is eighteen (18) IF the rider is still in high school. We would be happy to change the name to Chicks AND Chaps this year! Our novice team, Freedom Reigns, also practices and competes with SEMDTA! We are hoping to continue to build the team by adding a Green Team in 2023 made up of riders who only trot their mounts. Riders must own/lease/have full use of their drill horse for the full year (August 2023-July 2024) and have the ability/equipment to transport rider and horse to practice. Clinics are generally offered for FREE in the summer to help new riders learn the basics of drill prior to tryouts.

Busy rodeo weekend with the Chicks at the Coweta County Cattlemen’s Association Pro Rodeo! Incredible production! The opportunity to perform at this event is cherished by our riders. Huge thank you to the community for showing your support of the team and rodeo as a whole!

The food booth was a success and the team performed beautifully. Thank you to our parents, to our amazing Coweta 4H Extension Office, and to the kids who worked long and hard days on end! Great job all around!

The crowd at Belmont Park was roaring.

It was the 1999 Belmont Stakes, and Charismatic—already winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness—was chasing racing immortality. Thousands were on their feet. Millions were watching.

Then everything changed.

Near the top of the stretch, Charismatic took a bad step. His stride faltered. The dream was over in an instant.

His jockey, Chris Antley, didn’t hesitate.

He eased the horse immediately, swung out of the saddle, and did something rarely seen on a stage like that. Antley wrapped his arms around Charismatic’s left front leg, holding it up, bracing the horse’s weight with his own body.

He knew exactly what had happened.

A catastrophic fracture.
One wrong movement could mean the end.

While the crowd fell silent, Antley stood there—calm, focused, refusing to let go—until veterinarians and track staff rushed in. Thanks to his quick thinking and sheer physical effort, Charismatic was stabilized on the track.

The horse survived.

Charismatic was retired from racing, later becoming a successful sire. His life continued because, in the most pressurized moment of his career, a jockey chose compassion over competition.

That day wasn’t remembered for who won the race.

It was remembered for how someone showed up when it mattered most.
