It marks the end of an era, and it’s not easy to share this news. Since 2019, Champions Park has been a significant part of our work and lives. The City of Newberry has decided not to renew the operating agreement, so our management of the park will conclude on December 31.
It’s strange how fast the years went by. There were early mornings with dew still on the fields, long weekends full of games, and more late-night planning sessions than we can count. And through all of it, people showed up. Kids wanting to play, coaches doing the hard work, parents hauling gear and cheering until they lose their voices. Tournament directors who trusted us with their events. That support meant everything.
We would like to recognize one individual by name: Will Hooper. Will dedicated himself to this organization. While many may not have seen all the efforts he managed behind the scenes, the positive outcomes were certainly felt. The upkeep of the fields, the smooth ex*****on of events, and the seamless weekends during busy schedules all relied on someone who truly cares. Will was that person.
Thank you to all the organizers for bringing their events to our venue. Your dedication has turned Champions Park into a sought-after destination, drawing visitors from far and wide. Because of your efforts, we’ve seen significant economic benefits for the City of Newberry and Alachua County. The events welcomed over 8,900 teams, 345,000 attendees, generated 150,000 room nights, contributed $2.6 million in tax revenue, and created a total impact of $140 million.
To every player who stepped on these fields, thank you for bringing the energy that made Champions Park feel alive. And to every family who spent hot days, cold days, and everything in between out here, we’re grateful.
As we conclude this chapter, our priority is to ensure a seamless transition and that December operates smoothly for everyone involved. Most importantly, we want to express our gratitude. This park was significant to many, and being a part of it has been meaningful to us.
