Today we remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this country. They left behind families, futures, and dreams - so that we could live ours. Take a moment today, to think of them and the ones they left behind. Freedom has never been free. 🇺🇸

AFC Open Athlete Highlight: Wrapping Up the 2026 Open – Long Time Athlete Emily Dixon Partyka (26.3)

As we wrap up the 2026 CrossFit Open, we’re celebrating one last group of athletes who represent what these three weeks are all about.

This week’s Long Time Athlete highlight is Emily Partyka.

What keeps you coming back to the Open each year?
“I love competing, and I like to see how I stack up globally. I played sports in high school and college and having the opportunity to continue competing is a dream. The fact that I’m 42 and still learning new skills is a cherry on top. I put in effort at the gym and it’s fun to see what I can do during the Open.”

How did 26.3 compare to your first Open workout?
“I had no idea what I was getting into with my first Open. No plan, no strategy. I distinctly remember trying to do pull-ups on one of the smoother bars and failing. I may have shed some tears afterward, but I learned from it. Now I have a favorite pull-up bar (that isn’t smooth). With 26.3 I had it all mapped out and had a realistic goal in mind.”

Was there a moment in this workout where you had to dig in mentally?
“Funny you ask that, I actually did 26.3 twice, so I kinda knew how bad it was going to be. I started digging in immediately because I had a goal that I wanted to reach. Adam was judging me and was able to keep me motivated when doubts started sneaking in (thanks, boo!).”

What changes have you noticed in yourself since your early days at AFC?
“More muscles, more friends, more calluses. But for real, I’m so much happier with CF in my life. I’ve gone from doing banded pull-ups to ring muscle ups. Shout out to all the coaches who helped me with ALL the skills!”

What does being part of the Open at Always Forward mean to you at this point in your journey?
“It’s one of my favorite moments of the year. Cheering on my friends brings me so much joy in my life. Witnessing everyone take on the challenge truly makes our gym feel like family. Love you all!”

From first Open nerves to chasing goals and doing workouts twice just because you can. That’s growth.

Nice work in 26.3, Emily 👏

AFC Open Athlete Highlight: Wrapping Up the 2026 Open - Masters Athlete Karen Goodell (26.3)

As we wrap up the 2026 CrossFit Open, we’re celebrating one last group of athletes who represent what these three weeks are all about.

This week’s Masters Athlete highlight is Karen Goodell.

What was your mindset going into 26.3?
“I wanted to do my best, push myself a bit, but not hurt myself. I was a little worried because I had been sick and did not feel as energetic as usual. I felt more confident once I realized that I could perform all of the exercises at the masters RX level.”

What part of the workout played to your strengths?
“I have decent cardiovascular fitness and made quick progress with the burpees through the first two rounds, allowing me to spend more time on the lifts to ensure that I maintained good form.”

What part tested you the most?
“The thrusters were a challenge, especially as I got tired. Increasing the weight in the third round was so difficult. I was running low on energy and starting to see stars by then.”

How has your approach to training changed over the years?
“When I first started CrossFit, I needed two days to recover from each workout. Over the past two years, I have increased the frequency of workouts to three or four times a week and I try to maintain consistency. I appreciate the variety of the workouts and trust that consistent participation will result in a well-rounded fitness routine. Other than that, I just try everything, even if it seems impossible. Sometimes I am surprised by what I can do.”

What does competing in the Open at this stage mean to you?
“I am proud of my first Open because it demonstrates that I have gotten stronger and gained some new skills since starting CrossFit. It gives me confidence that I can stay active into the future. I also enjoy being part of a diverse community of athletes that try hard and support each other.”

Showing up, pushing through, and discovering what you’re capable of. That’s what the Open is all about.

Nice work in 26.3, Karen 👏

AFC Open Athlete Highlight: Wrapping Up the 2026 Open - Beginner Athlete Rachael Walling (26.3)

As we wrap up the 2026 CrossFit Open, we’re celebrating one last group of athletes who represent what these three weeks are all about.

This week’s Beginner Athlete highlight is Rachel Walling.

What were you most proud of during 26.3?
“I attended my first ever CrossFit class in July of last year, after never being consistent with fitness or exercise. Completing my first Open was fun, and by 26.3, I was so proud to be involved. I by no means excelled in the Open, but I showed up, I finished it, and for that, I am proud of myself!”

Was there a moment in the workout where you surprised yourself?
“The burpees were brutal, but honestly, being able to jump over the bar that many times surprised me the most. I was sure I would trip!”

What part of the workout challenged you the most?
“Burpees. My heart rate goes so high while doing them, and they are one of my least favorite exercises!”

What has felt different for you this Open compared to when you first started CrossFit?
“Before beginning CrossFit last summer, I had never heard of the Open. Being part of it was rewarding, and I am already looking forward to next year’s Open!”

What would you say to someone who feels nervous about signing up for their first Open workout?
“DO IT! You do not have to compete with anybody. Just show up, do your best, and set a standard for yourself to continue to progress. If you are hesitant, find a friend to do it with you. That is how I started, and is a huge part of what has held me accountable!”

From your first class last summer to completing your first Open. That’s what this is all about.

Nice work in 26.3, Rachael 👏

AFC Open Athlete Highlight: Beginner Athlete - Erin Henshaw (26.2)

During the Open this year, we’re highlighting three AFC athletes each week who represent different parts of our community: a Beginner Athlete, a Long Time Member, and a Masters Athlete. The Open means something a little different to everyone, and it’s always fun to hear the stories and moments that stand out from each workout.

This week’s Beginner Athlete highlight is Erin Henshaw.

What were you most proud of during 26.2?
“I was proud of myself for participating, to be honest! I’d never seen the workouts before and wasn’t sure what to expect, but I wanted to show up and try it out.”

Was there a moment in the workout where you surprised yourself?
“I picked a challenging-for-me weight for the lunges, and I was happily surprised that I could stick with it throughout.”

What part of the workout challenged you the most?
“Everything in the last round!”

What has felt different for you this Open compared to when you first started CrossFit?
“Each workout, I’m feeling stronger and more connected to this community.”

What would you say to someone who feels nervous about signing up for their first Open workout?
“Just show up! What I’ve loved about this place in the short time I’ve been coming is that the workouts can be the right challenge no matter where you are.”

Showing up, trying something new, and surprising yourself along the way. That’s what the Open is all about. Nice work in 26.2, Erin 👏

AFC Open Athlete Highlight: Masters Athlete - Dyan Couden (26.2)

During the Open this year, we’re highlighting three AFC athletes each week who represent different parts of our community: a Beginner Athlete, a Long Time Member, and a Masters Athlete. The Open means something a little different to everyone, and it’s always meaningful to hear the stories and perspectives behind each workout.

This week’s Masters Athlete highlight is Dyan Couden, who is now completing her 15th CrossFit Open!

What was your mindset going into 26.2?
“My mindset was to warm up and see how it went. I didn’t think the overhead walking lunges would be too bad (they were!) but knew the pull-ups would be hard for me. I had lost my pull-ups and would be doing them one at a time.”

What part of the workout played to your strengths?
“I have always been pretty good at walking lunges so I was glad to see that movement in the workout.”

What part tested you the most?
“The pull-ups. I am just starting to try to get them back.”

How has your approach to training changed over the years?
“I have been at AFC for 15 years and I don’t think my approach has changed very much! I do pace myself more and scale if I have to, but I don’t like it.”

What does competing in the Open at this stage mean to you?
“This is my 15th Open and I’m just grateful that I’ve been able to do this many and remain healthy and not injured. I’m very lucky.”

Dyan also shared something deeply personal about the last year and a half.
“I lost my son a year and a half ago. The depression that came after was life changing. I didn’t sleep or eat well and I didn’t work out much for a while. I lost a lot of strength in a year. I’m working hard to bring back some consistency in my life and I am starting to feel better. I’m getting there and exercise is the key for me. My son, his wife, my husband, and Elena have all encouraged me so much during this time, as well as all of the coaches at AFC.”

Fifteen Opens, countless classes, and a lot of resilience along the way. We are so grateful you are part of this community, Dyan. Nice work in 26.2 ❤️

AFC Open Athlete Highlight: Long Time Athlete - Adam Fahner (26.2)

During the Open this year, we’re highlighting three AFC athletes each week who represent different parts of our community: a Beginner Athlete, a Long Time Member, and a Masters Athlete. The Open means something a little different to everyone, and it’s always fun to hear the stories and moments that stand out from each workout.

This week’s Long Time Athlete highlight is Adam Fahner.

What keeps you coming back to the Open each year?
“I really didn’t have a competitive mindset growing up, and I definitely didn’t push to get better at much as a teenager. When I started CrossFit in early 2015 and did the Open in 2016, it kind of opened up a can of worms that somehow made me try harder at everything. So I keep coming back to the Open to kind of justify this mindset of trying to be as good as I can at this really hard thing.”

How did 26.2 compare to your first Open workout?
“My first Open workout was 16.1, and I was barely an Rx athlete. I was so smoked from 95 # overhead walking lunges I think I laid in a gravel parking lot for half an hour. From an experience perspective, I would say they’re parallel (I just like sending it?). From a mindset perspective I definitely look at trying my hardest on Open workouts as more of a fun challenge as opposed to trying to climb a leaderboard.”

Was there a moment in the workout where you had to dig in mentally?
“I was not expecting to finish this workout. Three or four years ago I think finishing it would have been my standard for the workout, but life has changed a lot. Being a husband, dad, and business owner have really shifted my training goals. When I finished the last set of lunges and realized I had a chance of finishing, I had to kind of shift my mindset from ‘okay fun little wod with muscle ups’ to ‘oh this is gonna suck, buckle up.’”

What changes have you noticed in yourself since your early days at AFC?
“Over the last decade I’ve changed a lot as an athlete. I’ve always loved to push the limit of my physical capabilities just to say I never left anything on the table. These days I’m still progressing, but I’m more focused on the experience of having a good time with everyone I’m working out with any given day. Still hammering, but with a little more grace. When I joined AFC I was 20 years old. Hilariously I’ve been around for a third of my life. I was working road construction and doing CrossFit and that was pretty much it. Over the course of 10 years I met some of my best friends here, and even met my wife Hannah here. I think the Always Forward community really helped push me to start doing residential concrete on my own. The truth is you can get fit anywhere with any made up tools you choose. But when 10 years feels like 2 years, I’d say you’re in the right spot.”

What does being part of the Open at Always Forward mean to you at this point in your journey?
“Being part of the Open and hitting these workouts with everyone just feels like a celebration to me. Without making it sound like Christmas, there’s something cool about these three weeks. It’s cool to celebrate another year of movement. Fist bumps just hit different after an Open workout. I really like that we can collectively not really want to do something like an Open workout, shoutout 26.1, but we do it anyway. Really says something about the mentality that we carry into other aspects of our lives. Cheers to many more. 🍻”

Ten years at AFC, still sending it, and still celebrating the workouts with the crew. Nice work in 26.2, Adam 👏

Happy 50th Birthday to Coach Tara! 🎉

If you’ve ever taken a class with Tara, you know she brings the energy every single time. Today we’re celebrating a big milestone and honoring one of her most iconic alter egos… Sally O’Malley.

As Sally would say:
“I’m 50 years old! I’m not one of those gals who’s afraid to tell her real age… and I like to kick… stretch… and kick!”

Tara brings so much positivity, encouragement, and fun to the gym. She shows up for our community again and again, and we’re so lucky to have her coaching, cheering people on, and keeping the vibe light even during the toughest workouts.

Join us in wishing Coach Tara a very happy 50th birthday! 🎂
