Cues

Every trainer has a set of cues they use to help clients perform exercises better.

"Feet pointing straight ahead."
"Tear the ground apart with your feet."
"Push your knees out."

Just a few examples.

One that I use often in the office...
"Look Gene Simmons in the eye."

If you look at the design in the grain of the door, you can see the image of Gene Simmons from KISS.

For reference, the last photo is me with "Gene" and the rest of the band KISS Alive a Tribute Band from this weekend. Just me reliving my adolescence.

We do some form of club work as part of our warm-up/movement prep before every strength class.

Today's routine:

Side to side swings (releasing thoracic tension)
Step back with overhead swing
Anterior contralateral swing with step back

Mini-bands are silly

This is a thought that keeps showing up on social media.

Mini-bands are useless and just waste time that should have been used for more important, functional upright movements.

True, good rehab and good strength training should look very similar.

But many people who first start exercising or are already in pain may be scared or anxious about looking stupid or creating more pain by moving.

So, I do think mini-bands can be a useful tool. They help "active" or "wake-up" muscles - which really means helping people learn how to use a muscle and what it feels like. And by successfully doing an exercise, it can help relieve the fear or anxiety a person may have about exercise. And if that gets them more excited or willing to do more upright, "functional" strength training, then using the mini-bands was time well spent.

Here is a protocol I got from Jack .

He made these 1.25 pound clubs.

He calls these heart shapes on the frontal plane.

Do 5 in each direction for 5 rounds or a total of 50 swings. Do this each day for 30 days to gain muscle memory.

I now do this protocol as part of my movement prep before most of my training sessions (especially any upper body work).

Power Training

As we age we naturally lose muscle mass and strength if we don't work to maintain and build it.

Unfortunately we lose power even faster than strength.

Power is the ability to use that strength in a hurry.

I've said before, you can be as strong as an ox, but if you can't use it quickly.... It's the difference between slipping on the ice and falling on your face.

Power may even be a better predictor of mortality than just strength alone.

Jump training is a good way to train power. You cannot jump slowly.

Pogo Hops, skipping, jump rope, rebounding on a trampoline, jump squats, let your imagination run wild.

Extra bonus: jumping creates impact which forces your bones to grow stronger reducing your chances of osteoporosis.

As Kelly Starrett DPT says, "when you stop jumping, you start dying. Stay springy."

Improving squat depth.

If you have trouble getting into a deep squat, you can use a heavy weight as a counterbalance.

This may offer some stability and allow you to squat deeper.

Chiropractic and Migraines

A randomized controlled trial reported in the European Journal of Neurology 2017

Participants were divided into three gropus...
- chiropractic adjustments
- sham chiropractcic adjustments
- medication

After 3 months of care, migraine days dropped from 6.5 to less than 4 per month (for anyone who's ever suffered from migraines, this can be a Godsend). Overall migraine burden was even lower than the medication group.

Even after care stopped at follow up 3, 6, and 12 moths later, the chiropractcic group were still better.

And the medication group had returned to baseline.

A sham chiropractcic adjustment is when the patient receives a fake treatment. This was a well controlled study. Over 80% of the patients could not tell the difference between a real and fake adjustment.

This is some exciting news.
