Today we celebrate Juneteenth.

At Grassroots, we spend a lot of time talking about strength. We train for it. We practice it. We pursue it relentlessly.

But strength is about far more than what happens under a barbell.

Strength is resilience in the face of adversity.
Strength is perseverance through challenge.
Strength is the courage to keep moving forward when the path is difficult.

Today, we honor the history, freedom, contributions, and enduring impact of Black Americans, while reflecting on the many forms that strength can take.

We are grateful for the diverse community that walks through our doors every day and for the opportunity to learn from, support, and grow stronger alongside one another.

Happy Juneteenth. ❤️🖤💚

Meet Tom ()! When he’s not throwing impossibly heavy weights around like it’s nothing or making excellent playlists, he’s encouraging his women’s strength classes and private clients to lift heavier, go deeper, and get stronger. If you’ve never trained with Tom before, definitely start with leg day…but getting down the stairs after will hurt.

Week 6 of our 8-week On-the-Bar Series 💥

Monday’s and Thursdays are barbell complex days:
Thursdays complex is
Bent-Over Row → Hang Clean (scaled here to a power clean at 65 lbs) → Thruster → Front-Rack Reverse Lunge
6 reps each. No putting the bar down.

Women’s Strength isn’t full of powerlifters or Olympic lifters.
It’s not made up of lifelong athletes.

For the most part, it’s women finding their strength for the first time.

And that’s what makes this so powerful.

Same 6 reps for eight weeks.
Slowly adding weight.
Learning new skills.
Building confidence under the bar.

Pam is absolutely crushing it. 💜
This is what strength looks like in real life.

Join us in April at the start of our next series (at BOTH locations!)

A simple, supportive way to start strength training 💜

If you’ve been curious about strength training — or about Women’s Strength at Grassroots — but don’t quite feel ready to jump straight into group classes, this is exactly why we created Foundations.

Foundations is our onboarding program designed to remove the biggest barriers women face when starting strength training: feeling intimidated, unsure where to begin, or worried about doing things “wrong.”

Here’s how it works:

Foundations includes five 30-minute private training sessions for $475
No assessment required.

Across the five sessions, you’ll learn the foundational lifts used in our Women’s Strength programming:

• Back squat
• Bench press
• Deadlift
• Overhead press
• Turkish get-up

You’ll also learn our basic warm-ups and movement prep, so when you come into class you know exactly what to do — no standing around, no feeling uncomfortable or unsure.

This is our way of welcoming you into strength training — and into our community — with confidence, clarity, and support.

We’re hiring coaches.

Grassroots Fitness Project has been part of the Upper West Side for 21 years, and we are growing into a second location — not moving.
Our original location at 78th & Amsterdam is staying open, and we’re expanding to 106th & Broadway.

We’re hiring for both locations:
• Coaches to join our established community at 78th & Amsterdam
• Coaches to be part of opening a brand-new gym at 106th & Broadway

This is an exciting growth phase for us and an opportunity to grow with the gym.

We’re looking for coaches who are interested in building a long-term fitness career — not something temporary, and not something done in isolation.

One of the things we hear most from trainers is how lonely the industry can feel:
coaching online, bouncing between gyms, or training clients on their own with no real team or community.

Grassroots is different.

Here, coaches are part of a team.
Clients are part of a community.
No one does this alone.

What matters to us:
• Real coaching over hype
• Education, mentorship, and continued development
• Lifting experience (prehab/rehab knowledge a plus)
• Being present, collaborative, and invested

What we offer:
• Competitive pay
• Benefits (401k, PTO, healthcare stipend)
• No floor hours
• We bring the clients — you coach

If you’re looking for longevity, connection, and a place to build a meaningful career in fitness with other humans around you, we’d love to hear from you.

DM us for details.
